Outdoor Kitchens Anyone?

I am re-doing the entire backyard....even building inground pool and would love to start outdoor kitchen project next. Has anyone recently put one in? I'd like to see "real" pics and share ideas.

I wish I knew how to post pics. I had one built along with the pool. It has the same granite tiles on the counter and raised bar as the kitchen, and looks lovely from the kitchen. Continuity and all that!

I put 20" tiles all the way around the bar sides to that those who sit there won't kick holes in the stucco. It's decorative and nice.

It has a built in sink with cold water, and a UL certified for outdoor use refrigerator.

It has a Pacific Gas Specialties drop in gas BBQ complete with infrared rotisserie.

There are 2 electric outlets which get used for all kinds of things.

There is a corner umbrella hole also.

What would I do different?

I'd have built in lighting.. Like a swirly modern overhead thing with drop lights on it or something (the airport bar in Vancouver has a perfect example), anchored by poles at each corner. We currently plug in a lamp and deal with it!

I'd have removable shelves built into the under BBQ access. Removable because sometimes you have to crawl under there.

I'd have a burner built in also.

Granite (although beautiful) gets HOT in summer, and FFFFrrreeezing in winter. I might pick a more user friendly bar top if I did it over. Something that is not so heat and cold conductive. My furniture is teak, and I'm thinking of a temporary teak top custom made to sit on top of the granite when people come over. No one wants to fry their arms when sitting at a bar!!

We are starting construction on an outdoor kitchen and I am overwhelmed with appliance choices. I saw that Kitchenaid now has outdoor appliances and after building my home and putting mostly Kitchenaid in - gas cooktop is a Wolf - I have been very pleased with them. I also think that my kitchen dealer where I purchased them at a competitive bid, may bea able to help on pricing. Has anyone had Kitchenaid outdoor? Likes/Dislikes? I don't think that DH will go for a $2300 outdoor frig and $5000 outdoor grill! Thanks Lisa

johnliu, I am trusting my GC on the ventilation issue. Since it is under a covered roof, code & sense requires it be vented. I have been so obsessively focused on the indoor stuff, that this has been on the back burner. I need to clarify with him about what this ventilation will look like. I trust his integrity and knowledge, but I hadn't thought about how it would look exactly. Good question! Upon further thought on this whole space, I think all I really need out there is the grill and the sink. Maybe a stainless steel cabinet under the sink, a set of drawers for grilling equipment and kebob sticks, and a cabinet for trash. I think most of the designers are talking about a true "outdoor" kitchen, which I don't need. I just need an outdoor grilling area with counter space. We are big homebodies and have small get togethers with friends and family, so I don't need all that extra stuff for my lifestyle. Thanks for the extra gas stub idea. I think that's an ideal solution!

Outdoor sinks, anyone?

How about having a sink made from soapstone, or fire clay, mounting it on a metal frame work? Or find a real porcelain, very large size bathroom sink. Alternatively how about one made of Silgranite (or its cheaper look-alike from Home Depot). I'm not sure how that material would stand up to strong, direct sunlight outdoors, however. Then there's always stainless steel, as long as there was no wooden subtrate involved. If you're thinking of SS, try looking for an old restaurant sink with an attached metal counter/drainboard. You could try out the plan using any old sink you find in a junkyard. For plumbing in any area where there was even a chance of frost I'd use those "freeze-proof" hose bibs connected to hose-like flexible supply lines; connected, in turn, to the faucet assemblies. Plus inside the house I'd have line shut-offs, and possibly drains, for easy emptying and protecting the system. The hose-to-regular plumbing connections will have to be thought through as you will run into the annoying fact that there are the so-called hose threading and pipe threading, which while looking similar do not mate with each other. You may need a "from-scratch" type plumbing shop to customize your supply line arrangements. For the drain you could either just let the water drain onto the ground, or do a large french drain type cachement area underfoot to absorb the water. Think about what cleaning products and soaps you might need when deciding whether to connect to existing waste disposal. You may also have code issues about this set-up to deal with. L

Has anyone used soapstone for an outdoor kitchen???

Yes, soapstone runs the gamut from very soft, easy to scratch, to very hard, difficult to damage, plus some that are somewhere in between. I have an extremely hard variety, Belvedere. After 6+ years of hard use, no scratches. Your fabricator obviously has little to no experience with soapstone. Otherwise, he’d know that soapstone is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. It will not fade in sunlight. Soapstone is impervious to everything. It will not stain or etch. Therefor, it needs no sealing. In fact, soapstone should never be sealed. Soapstone also absorbs heat evenly. It will not suffer from thermal shock (cracking) from extreme heat, or cold. Perfect for an outdoor kitchen. Because so many stoneyards and fabricators have little exlerience and knowledge about this wonderful stone, it’s best to purchase soapstone from a soapstone specialist, like M. Teixiera. Teixeira has locations in several states, and they ship all over the country. Not only do they have a tremendous selection of soapstones, a knowledgeable and friendly staff, but they fabricate their stones with expertise no granite, marble and quartzite dealer/fabricator has.
