Hello, I am trying to build a counter for outdoor use, a fairly small one around 5.5 ft long, as a counter and also a divider between the patio from side yard which is concrete.

Plan to use cinder block and mortar construction (with veneer to finish) and I would like to put a fairly thick granite top with round edge.

so my question is, how high should the counter be, how wide(deep), and how is the granite top attached. it would be heavy enough so should I need mortar between the slab and the first course of cinder block?

Also when constructing on a slighly sloped slab meant for drainage, how would you level it?

Use your kitchen counters as a guide. I believe the standard depth for as countertop is 25". If your kitchen has an island, you may want to use that as a guide.

In order to compensate for the slope of the slab, you may have to pour a concrete footing first before using the cinder block to build up. Use some scrap lumber and a 4 to 6 foot level to make sure your even.

Thanks for posting that pic! I'v been trying to get my island squared away and that really helps. I want one level but hate short stubby stools. The taller stools always look more elegant IMHO and this is a good way to get the change of counter to table without looking dated.

Our outlets are laid out horizontally and yes the back splash is a continuation of the counter top material. I have also seen people use the same tile back splash that they used throughout their kitchen. We are renovating our island to remove the bar height portion - have you considered keeping is all one level? It will look more open if it's one level and you'll have more usable counter top space, stools won't have to be so high... just a thought.

1) don't worry about time if this is a secondary space -- you can move in while they are finishing up 2) I'd use any light counter with those dark cabinets -- could be some kind of white quartz, or a lighter granite with some brown or gray speckling. Gris Perla could be nice if you find a decent slab. they can measure in an hour and install a week later, so don't sweat this final step.

Thanks for input. Removing backsplash not an option & of course decisions are easier when replacing all! But, sounds like your idea is to tie new counter in to backsplash color. The backsplash & granite do look more color complementary to each other when seen in person! The granite background isn’t as white as appears & is warmer. It’s Santa Cecilia granite but the lightest example we’ve ever seen of it.
