I love 30s Jacobean. My parents had a dining set done of it. The old styles............if you hang on long enough, they come back in vogue. I thought that hutch didn't look right. What a shame they butchered the legs off the china cabinet, and I suspect they sawed off part or all of the legs on the sideboard, too to make it low enough to accommodate settign the china cabinet on top of it. So they took a traditional three piece set and turned it into two. The thing is those sorts of things often happen to 'old furniture' before it's hit the point of vintage and when it's gone, it's gone forever. It's still a nice set however. Actually the fancy work over the glass in the china cupboard isn't that hard to redo. It's held into place by what amounts to fancy quarter round. I've popped the quarter round off my china cupboard door and removed mine to clean it up and get at the glass.

I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner. I'd say Linda is pretty close with her evaluation unless you are in a market where mid-century modern is especially hot now. It's not deflating to know it is probably worth what you paid for it in 1975, because that was probably a good amount and hey, how many things have you used for thirty five years you can turn around and get reimbursed for and it cost essentially nothing? I'm not going to stick my neck out and say it's Danish Modern, but its styling is pretty close and I've seen some authentic Danish modern Hutches of that era with almost identical design. Danish modern has been around since the forties and it's not usually crafted in cherry. But, I love cherry and that would be a selling point for me. I had a 'waterfall' bedroom suite when I was a senior in high school. I detested it, because it wasn't old enough to be collectable then, nor new enough to be stylish. I was thrilled when we moved and it stayed behind. LOL. But, boy would I love to have it now. I guess what I am saying is that good furniture is always in style eventually or to somebody. If people would actually pay what it's worth, even out of vogue good sets would hold their value compared to the mostly composite sets you'd spend a lot of money for now.

That style started in the 1830s, in Architecture as "Gothic revival" and had its last gasp in the 1920s in Sears Catalogs under the name of "Baronial". It went with the Tudor cottages and desire to emulate the rich who were bringing back entire castles or the innards of them. That is more elaborately carved than most of the Jacobean revival stuff I have seen. the cheap versions went in for turned, but not carved, legs and scroll-cut ornamentations. I like the way the seats of the chairs echo the wall, too. it's subtle but elegant. They almost look like Spanish Colonial revival. Here is a link that might be useful: Jacobethan era

Back to the original question; The set really doesn't strike me as having anything at all to do with Victorian style, other than that "revivals" of historical styles were popular, but this is clearly a set of it's own time; a couple of decades after Queen Victoria's reign ended. If you actually wanted Victorian, you'd have to look elsewhere. If you're asking if it would look nice in your Victorian-era home, then I'd say perhaps, but it would still clearly be seen as younger than the house. Casey
