Need suggestions for rough shower floor - dog shower in garage

Hi, I'm having a dog shower put in our garage and am having trouble figuring out what to put on the shower floor. I originally thought we'd just have plain cement with a drain, like you see in horse barns for cleaning the horses, but the GC said no. Instead, he bought a pre-formed vinyl shower pan, and I said no, b/c I'm pretty sure my labrador retriever's nails will do a lot of damage and it will look terrible in short order. I was also hoping for something very low maintenanance, as in hose it off and call it a day.

My next thought was to do 1" mesh slate tiles, because they look nice and are rough. Not good either; I've read they flake, and the slate colors bleed into the grout. Does anyone know of a porcelain tile that has a lot of texture for traction, and that comes in a fairly natural, darker look?

I wouldn't rule out slate...we have slate in an older home (it's about 60 years old). We've lived there 15 years and have never done a thing to it and it gets abused by our chocolate lab and we use this entry way...daily! It's constantly getting wet and muddy....when I do get around to wiping it down it looks just fine...but I'm sure others here will give you good advice.

We too are considering such a doggie set up in a future home build ..I would LOVE to see a floor plan of this area to see how you're setting it up! Thanks.

Dog shower? I'm envious!!

Do you think you might want a raised platform or tub for washing your dog? I wash my 3 dogs outside. I finally figured out my back feels a WHOLE lot better if I have the dog stand up on the deck which is about 30 inches above the ground where I stand.

I think a 1" square tile would be fine. Maybe unglazed porcelain?

We have a similar shower situation to harriethomeowner. House was built in 1956, with basement shower with painted cinderblock walls and a painted (and peeling) concrete floor. The walls are in pretty good condition, just UGLY green paint. I'd like to do a simple update to this space -- we'll be moving in a couple of years, so I don't want to sink a ton of $$ into it, but it needs to be freshened up. I think the least expensive option is just to repaint, but I don't know what kind of paint was used before. A lot of the basement trim/doors appears to be a glossy oil-based paint and the shower floor is the same color, so possibly it is the same? Not sure about the walls. I'm thinking just scrape up as much of the loose flaking paint as possible, clean the floor and walls with TSP, dry well, prime and repaint? But what primer and paint is best? I'm wondering how the pool paint held up? How about the XIM Tile paint?

Being that the hex tile is multi colored, I don't think anything would be a real issue. I would keep it sealed, however, being that it's natural stone. As for tile choices, that's a personal choice. I WILL say that several of my customers have done as you've suggested (shower walls and bathroom floor tile being the same).

Yes, sorry, I meant to put into the post that the contractors we're using have already remodeled our basement bathroom, and passed code inspection with flying colors. They have also contributed substantially to design decisions on that project which was fitting a 3 piece bath into a 2-piece space. And it works marvelously. I was home during that entire process, my husband and I inspecting every step. Our new tub is on order. We're gutting this thing, but maintaining the same footprint. I currently don't have a photo of the granite slab, but will try to obtain one. I was so excited by it's beauty, I actually forgot to take the photo! The countertop, vanity, and recessed medicine cabinets will be the focal point, if a bathroom this size can have one. But, as Christina says on "Flip or Flop", when you only have one bathroom in a house, it has to be spectacular (max function/max AHHHH factor). Thanks all!!

Classic Houzz. How much is the permit cost and whats the lead time for the inspectors on the 3 phases...... plumbing rough, then the waterproofing flood test then the final inspection? .......all in A few day says Rick in a condo w an association even....... your not skipping permits inspections are you. im curious how my 20 yrs of experience specific to shower bldg. say you cant REALLY PROPERLY do it, but you are certain you can !!!! how will you meet cure times for mortars, grouts and sealants? what type mortar are you using w kerdi. I will love to see the TCNA method number youll knock out in A day. And how you achieve all MFG instructions, ANSI and TCNA specs thru out. 😊Always fun the houzz. Rick for tile pres of the year !

What about doing the concrete and painting it with an epoxy paint? You could even add sand to the paint to give it a little slip resistance, if you like.
