A lot of the cost would depend on the area you are in. The best thing to do is have a few people give you estimates. Estimates are free and then you know exactly where you stand for cost. For example if I tell you what I would charge but no one around you will do it for my cost, it doesnÂt help your friend.

I guess you could judge "the area" best by the fact that each unit would cost $500. I think the apartment -- a 4 family is probably worth about $200,000 or so. It's in the midwest. Does that help anyone?

It's a long story why he's not getting estimates... but generally speaking can someone give me some, any estimate... is it like $500 or $10,000? Again, just a simple update...

And, yes, it would help me to know what you charge for a cheaper update...(no marble, no brass, etc) I just need an idea...

Again, an older apartment building, in a middle class neighborbood, install new toilet, cheap vanity, average floor, average paint. About how much? Thanks. And, how much more would a drop in bath tub cost to add to it? If you'd be getting a cheaper one... Are they like $200 or like $5000?

Why don't you just do some online research? Look up vanities, toilets, faucets, sinks. There's big names like Home Depot plus all the online stores.

It doesn't sound as though you want major changes in structure? Add up the cost for the number of vanites, sinks and faucets you need first. Add in new toilets. See what the materials will cost you before you even go to labor. You can probably do most of that yourselves.

Besides, sinks can range from $140 to $1800! Only you know how cheap , or what style you want.

Ok, it's not for me. It's for a friend of mine who was injured in an accident and is in rehab.. he may have to sell his apartment to pay his bills.. realtor is saying not to fix up bathrooms, but is deducting a price from the selling price.. he thinks price is way off, I thought someone here may know. Obviously, I was wrong.

And, yes, I did look up Home Depot.. not sure on labor though... I would guess that would be the bulk of it. I may try the babysitting forum and ask there since there is such a wealth of info here. They'd at least take a stab. Thanks again for all your help....... ps.. I thought I said cheap. I know you 'can' buy expensive stuff; I thought I was pretty clear about not spending a lot. And, by the way, for anyone else out there who may want to know. I found some info online I think it was at this old house webiste. It mentioned some figures about $1800 for cheaper updates. Other places I looked suggested $4000 or so but I think included more tile work. If you need to go even cheaper, try craiglist to buy your stuff. Funny, how I can give a rough estimate and have never done any bathroom work in my life. Again, everyone, thanks for your help.

Sorry you are frustrated with us :). You are looking for a simple answer to a question that has no simple answer. There are just too many variables for anyone to give you an accurate estimate. If you want someone to just say out of the blue - oh $2000 a bath - that's not helpful.
We don't know what labor goes for in your area - could be $20 per hr, could be $100 - too much of a variable to even try and take a stab at guessing.
You can try searching online for a renovation calculator, one that will allow you to place your zip code and the square footage and see if it will give you a ballpark.
Another way is to pick out what you would want to put in the bathrooms, add the costs of all the items and then tack on as much as 50% for labor. This may give you a rough estimate of cost - but not a very accurate one.

Labor is very hard to estimate and really depends on your area and how busy good contractors get. To give you a rough estimate we spent about $6k on gut renovation of small bathroom (about 5x7) using all Home Depot & Lowes products. Lowes sent me couple of coupons so I saved a few dollars there. If you are not taking the space to the studs, this is a general break-down of the rest (rounded numbers):

tile $2.50/sq.ft material + 3.50/sq.ft labor
tub $200 American Standard fiberglass
sink $70 Americast(?) + stainless faucet $90
toilet $150
showerhead $50
vanity w/integrated sink $199
medicine cabinet $45
lighting recessed + above sink fixture $200
bath fan $90
grout/caulk/garbage/nails/screws/etc - small stuff but adds up to few hundred
labor - some was diy, the rest $200/day
