I received my Baker Creek Heirloom Catalog and I am floored. This catalog is awesome. If anyone has old catalogs of Baker Creek I would love to have them.

This 2008 catalog is by far the very best catalog I have ever seen. It is worth saving for its incredible information and awesome pictures. I will really cherish this catalog and am making up an order to make sure I get one every year.

I have looked at Baker Creek online on the internet and liked it but the printed catalog is so much better then I could ever imagine.

There are a couple of heirlooms I hope they add to their catalog in the future. I am going to email them my suggestions.

As far as I am concerned this catalog blows all other catalogs out of the water including Burpee and Parks and Thompson and Morgan. This sets a new standard in seed catalogs. Truely awesome.

I hope everyone supports their efforts to bring heirlooms to everyone.

It is a lovely catalogue and a good source of some very old heirlooms. I think their melon and winter squash selections are my fave section.

You may have to subscribe to get the catalog. I've ordered from them on three occasions and have not gotten a catalog.
I will question them about a catalog if it's as good as you say.

I hear that. There's just a lot of political backlash from this catalog and some just don't like the company because their minority-buying online forum members tend to be hippie-dippy. Playing loose with the claims bothers me a lot more than the political stuff. Today is just the day I got sick of hearing about how "political" B.C. is I guess. Personally, I think they have a political viewpoint and that "political viewpoint" has more to do with agriculture policy than some lofty party-specific goal. That's just my view, though. As far as their seed. Heck, most of us here can get most of the seed cheaper elsewhere looking around or in trade from each other, but I've never experienced anything even remotely "bad business" from them even if some of their text-work in their catalog can make some weird statements. Almost all their descriptions are true, but just because almost every other catalog out there makes occasional weird/half-truth statements doesn't excuse anyone from it. I get just as tired of reading catalogs (almost everyone does this) that has 1/4+ of their listings as "the best/most demanded" out of their fields. You'd think these seed suppliers had Black Friday-like lines at the field by the 100s waiting to get at that new winter squash the first second of harvest!

lol...thanks. Many on here will let you know my pictures are so neat because i'm utterly obsessed with my gardening. Hah...Anyway, I studied many posts on here that say about what you said, that many veggies including peppers, require a higher soil temp for germination. Since I have a few uses for the heating mats already, including that, I figured they are worth it. =) Regarding the heirloom maters, I have so many now to choose from that I don't know if i'll even be able to grow half of them to fit in my garden...lol. I'm gonna at least add Amish Paste & Sungold Select II to my list of plants for this year. I can save the rest of the seeds for future plantings, trades, etc.. - Steve

Carol, I always have transplants standing by to a certain extent even if I just started them in small paper cups a week or two before I intend to transplant them. How old the transplants are will vary. I usually keep a few tomato and pepper transplants in 1 gallon pots on the patio where they get morning sun/afternoon shade well into June or early July so I can plop them into the ground to replace a plant that dies. If nothing dies, I'll eventually toss the unused 'backup' plants onto the compost pile. In a rainier year, they may send roots down into the compost pile and grow there, but since the compost pile is not fenced off from the wild animals, a deer or rabbit or something usually will eat them within a few weeks. For follow-on or succession crops, how I prepare succession plantings will vary, depending on which kind of vegetable we're talking about. For example, I often plant southern peas to replace broccoli and cabbage when they're done. So, when I see the little broccoli heads just starting to size up, I'll sow southern pea seeds in tiny bathroom-sized paper cups with the bottoms cut out of them. Then, when it is broccoli harvest time, I harvest the heads, pull up the plants (normally I don't leave them for sideshooting because I'm eager to get the new crop into the ground) in the morning and then in the cool evening hours, I'll transplant the southern peas, cups and all, into the garden and water them well. Then they have a little time overnight to adjust to being transplanted, but since I have transplanted them in their bottomless paper cups, there's rarely any transplant shock at all. It is not essential, obviously to start the seeds in cups as opposed to direct sowing, but I do it for two reasons. First, to get the succession crop to produce earlier a bit earlier. (Remember that everything I do is aimed at maximizing the harvest we get from our garden.) The plants from cups are a week old most of the time when I set them out. Secondly, to ensure no wasted space. If I sow seeds, I may have an empty spot here and there where seed didn't sprout. When I transplant young seedlings, there are no empty spots. It can drive my friends and neighbors crazy when they stop by one day and see a raised bed full of young pea plants that only yesterday had huge broccoli plants. I, however, love those fast transitions. For a long time, I assumed I was a garden wierdo (and maybe I am) because I preferred to start every followon crop in cups and transplant immediately after yanking out the previous crop. However, I then learned that some serious biointensive gardeners use a similar method--starting every single thing they grow from transplants and direct seeding virtually nothing for the same reasons I do...maximizing harvest and productivity, and then I didn't feel like such a weirdo any more. That's one way I succession plant, but there's another method that works really well too and that is to plant sprawling, rambling warm-season plants close to early season plants. You might be putting those sprawling plants into the ground in April or May when the cool-season crop was planted in February or March. Then, after the early cool-season plants are harvested, the warm-season plant that was planted much later will quickly spread and take over the recently-made-available space. For example, I might plant Seminole pumpkin near the potato bed. It will be starting to ramble and roam and move close to the potato bed, and then after I dig the potatoes, it will take over that area. Or, I might plant Sugar Baby watermelon in May somewhat close to the carrots that were planted in March. Once the carrots are harvested in June, Sugar Baby rapidly takes over the space they formerly occupied. Most years, this works out really well. It may seem peculiar to some folks to start carrot seeds inside and transplant them outside, but it guarantees me a carrot crop instead of having to spend 2, 3 or 4 weeks to wait and see how well the carrots do (or do not) sprout in any given year. Some years, usually either in a drought year when soil is exceptionally dry or in an exceptionally wet, rainy year, I start carrots inside and other years when the weather is right in the middle--not too dry and not too wet--I direct sow them outside. If I am direct sowing carrots, I prefer to use homemade seed tapes made during the cold winter months, so sowing the carrot seeds outdoors takes only a few minutes and their spacing is pretty good other than maybe an occasional gap in a row where a seed didn't germinate. A Three Sisters garden is another form of succession planting where you can harvest 3 crops at 3 different times from one bed. I plant the corn first and let it get at least knee-high before I plant beans that will climb the beanstalks later. These beans need to be direct-seeded because I don't want to disturb the roots of the previously planted corn plants by using a trowel to dig a hole large enough to transplant beans started in cups. If it is an early corn with short stalks like Early Sunglow, I plant half-runners that won't overwhelm the stalks when they start climbing. A much taller corn can handle a bean that is more of a rampant grower. I will plant pumpkins and winter squash a couple of weeks later (it depends on soil temps) around the perimeter of the corn and bean planting. They'll ramble and roam and eventually spread all over that area. The corn is normally harvested first. Then, later on, it will be the green beans that are harvested and, when harvesting them, I have to be careful that I don't step on the pumpkins vines and crush them. Eventually, the beans are pretty much done and the pumpkins or winter squash are getting quite large and I'll harvest them last. That's a way to get at least three crops from the space generally devoted to one crop. I think I have grown virtually every single crop you can grow from seed in paper cups, except for carrots, turnips, radishes and beets. I have started carrots inside in the cardboard tubes from paper towels, wrapping paper, and toilet paper. I save all those cardboard tubes, cut the larger ones down to the same size as the ones from toilet paper, line them up in a seed flat, fill them with a soil-less seed starting mix, plant the carrot seets, and transplant them out into the garden within a week of the carrots sprouting. Carrot seeds will sprout much more quickly for me indoors in warmer temps under lights than they do outdoors, and if we have one hard rain while I'm waiting for the carrot seeds to sprout outside in my sloping garden, there won't be any carrots because a hard rain will wash the seeds out of the garden and down into the bar ditch or the woods. In order for carrots sprouted indoors to do well, though, you must transplant them outside almost the minute they sprout. They get really long really fast so you can't keep them inside more than a very few days after they sprout or they'll grow out of the bottom of the cardboard tubes. Another way I speed up the succession planting process is to pre-sprout seeds indoors in wet paper towels or coffee filters, and then transfer those pre-sprouted seeds directly into the ground where they are to grow. So, I'm still direct seeding them, but with the pre-sprouted seeds, the plants will pop up out of the ground in a day or two instead of in a week or two, and there won't be any gaps in a row where seeds didn't sprout, because I discard seeds that didn't sprout and only plant the sprouted ones. I even use presprouting for seeds I'm starting in flats on the light shelf sometimes, although that's more common in a year with few fires. In a year with lots of fires, I'm gone too mcuh to pre-sprout and just throw the seeds in the flat, put them on the light shelf, and try to remember to check them every morning and evening to see if they need watered. I use all kinds of tricks like that to make my garden as productive as possible. When people say they cannot understand how I can fill up a root cellar, 2 or 3 freezers and hundreds of canning jars from a garden "only" the size of mine, I think to myself that if they lived here with me for one gardening year and saw all the extra effort I put into keeping every square inch planted and producing something, then they'd understand how it is possible to get such large yields. I hate, hate, hate "wasted space" in the garden and do everything I can to avoid having any land sit idle for any period of time during the gardening season. Dawn

You can request a catalog through their website. Mine was sent promptly and is awesome. Some of the pictures look like they belong in frames. I'm debating whether I want to cut mine up after ordering and get some new wall art or whether to keep it intact for future browsing.

(If you want to buy a good lettuce from Baker Creek, get the Little Gem, a wonderful little fast-growing dwarf romaine that is nearly impossible to kill.)

The owner cut me off of his mailing list. I too think he has an awesome selection and have purchased from him in the past. The reason he cut me off his mailing list was because I disagree with him politically and called him a "hippy freak" in the garden watchdog. Funny thing is I just ordered his catalog under a pseudonym and I now get the catalog once again.

You abused him on his web site and he said I accept love but not abuse. And as an act of love he shut off your free catalog so as to wake you up to your abusive behavior.

Did you apologize for your abuse or simply expect people to accept your abuse and love you anyway.

What is it about seed catalogs that is important to you?

Is it the pictures, the seed quality and trueness, the variety of items offered, the prices, the service, the fact that it's family owned and small and not a large company, the number of new varieties introduced each year, etc, ?

And yes I know Jere and have almost since he started with his endeavors at Baker Creek, and this post is definitely not directed at Baker Creek.

I just would like to know what you find so awesome about rareseeds catalog as opposed to so many other catalogs that I know.

What other catalogs do you get as a basis for comparison?

Pictures are nice but not completely necessary either.

Important but I know that it doesn't always happen either. And I'm not always that disappointed when a mistake DOES happen.

the variety of items offered,
Yes!

the prices,
It's important but not everything. I like variety and will pay additional for variety (so I don't have to order from 100 different places, which I do anyway!)

the service,
Yah... I've had to report errors or complete germination failures... and yah, it's important for me to be able to feel like people will stand by their product/seeds. A credit (not necessarily) another batch of seed is fine with me... but service is important - I've ordered from many of the ones discussed at this forum with no complaints with regards to service with any of them.

the fact that it's family owned and small and not a large company,
I like the thought of a family owned biz, but... I'm not persnickity. Oh, alright I am!

the number of new varieties introduced each year, etc, ?
I do like new varieties - so yah, that's part of it for me.

I also appreciate a good description on how to germinate, grow, what to expect... I mean it wasn't until I read Carolyn's book that I was told WHY I had such a horrible time with Oxhearts in the house! No one mentions that - THAT would be good to put in a catalog... I'd start my plants (all my tom plants) 6-8 weeks and that was far too long in the house for the oxhearts! I find one particular catalog great for their descriptions (but I don't buy tomatoes from them so I won't mention the name).

These are good questions to contemplate...

And I still have not gotten my TGS Catalog, but broke down today and ordered on line. :)

Well I haven't gotten mine either. LOL

Linda said she was going to put a couple of copies in the mail first class and I haven't gotten them either. Over the eyars she's become a good friend and quite a few of the heirlooms in the catalogs are ones that I sent her. Which remonds me that I have to send two of my four new ones listed in the SSE Yearbook to her for trial.

It's not that I order tomato seeds from any source these days b/c I have so many nice tomato friends that send them to me, but I like to have the catalogs for reference when answering questions.

Got my general Jung's catalog today as well as the Cook's Garden and what a surprise the Cook's Garden one was.

Why? Because the transition from the original layout is so different from what Ellen and Shep Ogden started out with and after their divorce Ellen continued with. But I knew it had been sold to Burpee's and now it looks like a typical Burpee catalog, which to me means 1/2 large pictures and about 1/2 text and not that many varieties presented.

I mean we all like pictures but to have a seed catalog where a good part of each page is an in your face picture just doesn't do it for me. One can make the pictures smaller and still get the impact.( smile)

I got my TGS a few weeks ago, maybe they have different batching runs at the mailing factory and that accounts for why some people already have their catalogue and others don't.

Good question Carolyn. I can only answer for me. I do not have a criterion for a great catalog. But when I opened up the Baker Creek Catalog I was very taken by the quality of the pictures and the different layout. It seems to me the colors in the printing are very high quality. The pictures of the melons just jump out at me. I like the melons looking so real. Then really call to me to want to have some to eat.

I get the feeling that the entire catalog is put together by a very creative person. Everything seems so full of fun and life and beautiful veggies. I like the group pictures of the melons and squash. The vivid colors of the group with different sizes.

It also seems to me that the catalog along with your book is like a prime source for information on beautiful heirloom tomatoes and other veggies.

I do like to order from people who are trying to help preserve our genetic diversity. That is important to me and I look past the price. I want people like SSE Baker and Sandhill to make a profit so they can continue their important work of preserving our genetic heirtage.

I had never before seen a Baker Creek catalog. So many things in the catalog were different and combined to very strongly impress me. The beautiful colored pictures of such high quality is obviously a standout. I intend to save up my Baker catalogs as reference works. I wish I had ordered from them previously but glad I have seen their catalog this year. I intend to order from them every year along with this year.

Maybe I should say that I feel the entire catalog is inspired. The company is inspired. I like how Jere started the company when he was 17. Everything about the company is such a beautiful story. I really believe Jere is doing an important job and that he will be called upon to do more important work in preserving our genetic heritage over the years. The catalog seems like the source of such vibrant living wonderful spirit and positive good works in this world.

Maybe I can summarize by saying that the catalog and the company seem to vibrate love to everyone who reads it. It is a creative beautiful love that comes from the company and fills the hearts of all of us who love to garden. I certainly feel so much more happy as I read the catalog each day. I winner in my eyes. It fills me with love.

It makes the tasteless hybrids look so dead and lifeless. It causes the heirloom to spring into life with vibrant colors. A work of art.

Any and all books are of historic value, I commend all who collect and create archives!

Dan, can you expound on the incredible information in the catalog? Is there information included, that IÂm missing from other catalogs? Can you believe the histories, since many have already questioned histories of varieties at another site? And, are the pictures a little over saturated in color? Mine are, a little too much Photoshop in my opinion.

I echo CarolynÂs question, what makes this catalog so much more appealing than other catalogs? I know you have tried to answer, but you started talking about love this and love that, can you be specific about the catalog itself?

All additions of true heirlooms to a catalog are important to keep the parentage viable. That is a good thing. Accuracy of the heirloom or parentage is more important. Is it a true heirloom, or a recently created OP? There is so much creative writing going on, do we really know the truth? Can BC be believed 100%?

Again, what blows this catalog out of the water? What makes this catalog the new standard? BTW, I have a bit of experience when it comes to professional photography and commercial 4 color printing.

The information isn't necessarily any better than other catalogs I have, in fact some others are in formats I prefer for serious information searches. I can not vouch for the accuracy of everything. But I do know, holding that catalog takes away alot of my seriousness and turns me toward dreams of summer breezes and juicy garden-fresh produce. And on the cold, dark, wintry days around here recently, that was refreshing.

Again, IÂd like to reiterate that IÂm not trying to start a confrontation. But, because of the exuberance displayed by Dan, I figured there was something I missed or over looked in the BC catalog.. I donÂt need, or want, to rehash anything written above.

Naturegirl, I couldnÂt agree with you more. We are in the midst of a long winter, the older I get, the more I hate the cold. Being in a similar growing climate we share 6 months combined of spring, summer and fall, and another 6 months of cold, winter weather.

My thoughts are on March, for that is the time to start seeds. Even then, we have another 8 weeks before we can wear shorts and short sleeve shirts. But, once we start those seeds we know our short summer is coming.

I wish global warming was coming down to the lower Great Lakes.

P.S. Just wanted to add, I have nothing against the BC catalog!

Neoguy, I've no problem with your questions. I'm just not sure I can give a reasonable explanation of why I like the catalog so much. I think maybe BK's catalog stands out to me because it is different, artsy both graphically and literarily (?!?) Maybe technically the color and info isn't perfect, I am not a good judge of that, but it comes together well for me. I wouldn't say it is the best, not sure I'd want to say that about any one catalog. It is just the one I dream with the most. I even made my grown-up, mostly non-gardening kids look at it while they were visiting over Christmas. One of the three saw it as artwork, the other two looked at me like I had lost it since they moved out :)

Dangould's praise sounded a bit like my SIL, the professional artist, talking. Somehow the layout, words, pictures, etc. in the catalog reach out and strike emotions in a way I can not understand. Maybe my SIL could explain it, I just know it connected with me.

However, for lots of technical information I'll go to other catalogs with charts and formats that make it easier for me to be analytical and reasonable in my planning. Not that BK doesn't have any of that. But I find others have what I need in formats that are easier for me to focus on and use.

Still haven't placed any orders.....what criteria will determine who gets those? With all the seeds I already have around here, maybe I shouldn't even order any, yeah, right, like that will happen :)

For what it's worth: I also have some brochures from a professional growers expo aimed at large scale producers. Several of them are beautiful and inspiring, too....but no way can I order seeds in the huge quantities they advertise :)

Maybe Neoguy can enlighten the rest of us as to the specific catalogs he feels (or his mentors "at another site" endorse) that present all the correct information regarding "heirlooms" vs. "open pollinated" and containing all the correct historical information about the various varieties along with the undoctored photographs and unembellished descriptions.

That works for me: catalogs which help and teach and share...which ones do that best for you? I want some more of those. I like pictures, but to a point, and after that pictures become like just one more gushy sales oriented description ala how loaded with fruit all season long,delicious, perfectly balanced with acid, sublimely sweet, blah, blah... it does my heart good to read a little honesty like "prone to cracking" instead. Such spirit on all sides about a catalog is inspiring in itself.
Early in this thread, I ordered a Baker's catalogue and am looking forward to seeing for myself.

As soon as I find one that is 100% accurate IÂll let you. But, than again, I have much to learn, so I probably wouldnÂt know a 100% accurate catalog even if it smacked me in the head.

I like all the catalogs, I canÂt say one is more appealing than another. All are informative and most are going to have some errors, most unintentional. Some errors could be blamed on the printers themselves. We all know there are some seed companies that create "new histories" for their "New" offerings. I am NOT putting Baker Creek in that category.

As for "mentors", there are many, at many different forums. I try to learn from the folks who know more than I and are willing to share.

The only reason I got involved with this thread was because the original post sounded like a paid advertisement for Baker Creek and that in itself is not a bad thing. Look, IÂve bought seeds from them in the past and probably will in the future. We all have our favorites for various reasons and that is a good thing, otherwise things would be pretty boring.

Yes they have a very nice catalog. If you order hope that the seeds grow true to description. That and their service wasn't the best in my experience. The seeds that grew true were great. One that didn't was but still don't know what I have as it should of been RL and was PL. You will find some crosses with every vendor but it seemed I encountered more than normal. Just my experience.

Well, I *did* take the baker creek catalouge on my 2nd honeymoon, and spent several hours glazing over my husband's eyes by the fire debaiting which melons/berries/etc... to try. Hippee freak? yep, I must be.

How funny is this-I just put down the bakers creek catalogue after marking several pages..

I planted chinese red runner beans last year and they were as gorgeous as the picture, but they had a terrrible taste! I do admit tho, they were a conversation piece in my garden..

I think the BEST catalogue and the very best prices and seed that grows true is the one and i can't remember the name where all seed packs were about 1.75 and shipping was free..last year carolyn tipped me off to this site and altho I dont think there is a true catalogue, but there are thousands of offerings on the website..please carolyn what is the name of this outfit?
I beleive the mans name is glen and he raises poultry?????

I think the thompson and morgan catalogue provides a wealth of information on flower seeds, also. I think Gurneys has great info on corn and I like the john scheepers flower seeds.

Ruth, you're referring to Sandhillpreservation.com which is a family business run by Glenn and Linda Drowns.

I don't know if the website has yet been updated but I do know that the catalogs are supposed to be sent out the end of this week as they always are this time of year.

And yes, Glenn is very keen on preservation of poultry and maintains about 200 different breeds. And that working full time as a HS Science teacher as well as being Curator of Cucurbits for SSE and also maintaining the SSE corn stock seeds.

I feel tired just thinking of what his and Linda's life is like. ( smile)

Carolyn, and since we're talking Baker Creek here, Glenn has known Jere for quite a while and Jere started out, so I'm told, getting heirloom birdies from Glenn. And Glenn has furnished many seed starts to Jere as well.

Did anyone think that Jere's opening letter was a bit odd? This guy is obvoisly very political which is fine (someone needs to be), but not what I care to read in my seed catalogs. It seems like preaching to the choir. Apparently if I don't buy local, I'm a "test animal" for "Wal-Mart and their allies in Washington" I"m not saying Jere's wrong, but once again, it seemed like an odd place for such a rant.

Well, I *did* take the baker creek catalouge on my 2nd honeymoon, and spent several hours glazing over my husband's eyes by the fire debaiting which melons/berries/etc... to try. Hippee freak? yep, I must be.

That's my kind of honeymoon. Your hubby is very lucky man.

I will state I have no connection to Baker Creek. In fact this was the first time I ever saw their catalog.

I will say this week I was very disappointed in Territorial Catalog. I wanted to get just one item. Cost about $3.25 for the seeds and $7.00 for shipping. that is over $10. for one pack of seeds. Obviously they only want the big buyers. Now I have already spent well over $100 on seeds and more to come. But if they wanted my bigger order they needed to get their catalog to me faster.

As far as I am concerned Territorial has priced itself out of the market for me.

I like the Baker Creek Catalog but my favorite to buy seeds is FEDCO. I get seeds for about $1 a pack and no shipping charges. Territorial wants $3 a pack and $7 shipping.

I do not have any relationship to any and all seed companies. I speak as an independent buyer. Look if I can get 40 packs of seeds from Fedco at $1 each or $40 total or buy them for $3 each $120 plus even more shipping on a bigger order. Hands down my pockets. Keep the money. I am going to spend $30 before I spend $120.

My second big order went to Sandhill Preservation. I support their good work in preserving genetics. They also have some things I wanted that I see no where else. I hope people will support Sandhill in their important work.

Now Baker Creek does some heirlooms and had great color. So I was impressed.

So I like Fedco and Sandhill. But they do not have the best catalogs. But they keep cost down and sell for a good price. Fine with me.

So far I have ordered from 5 seed companies this winter for well over $100 and I want more seeds. so I plan on more orders. wish someone had it all.

My choices for Best Company to purchase seeds

1. Fedco best prices and good selection. The best value for the money.

2. Sandhill Preservation. Doing important work to preserve genetics. A good family company at low prices.

Both have low cost catalogs.

Johnny's everyone likes Johnny's. Great company research on what grows well in the North.

Osborn is a good practical company that is geared toward the farmer. If you want Broccolini you might not find it anywhere else but here.
