bluestar grills vs the new Capital's grills

I need a new range and have narrowed my selection down to a bluestar (until I saw the new capitals) I figured on a 36 inch bluestar with a grill, even though I will have to take out a cabinet to accommodate it, since I really like the thought of a grill, and they don't make a 30" model with that option. Great...and now I see the new capital has a 30 inch range with a grill option- I also see the price 5,199 from US appliance- Yikes! Okay, okay, I know it has a rotisserie and other neat features but what caught my attention was they claim the grill is infra-red? I assume this is like the broiler? What is the Bluestar's grill? And do you Bluestar owners find the grill a bear to clean? (I am no where I can see either model)

Do you think the Capital new grill would be easier to clean? I am just wondering if I should hold out to see more about the capital once it is available or just go order a bluestar. My current range is limping along and I really am itching to get something decent. And my husband is about ready to kill me if I don't just make up my mind, but when they are all so expensive, I don't want to make a poor choice I will regret. Thanks in advance for your replies!

I hear those new Capitals will be nice, but pricey. The Bluestar grill is a flame grill - 15000 BTU's. I don't believe this is the selling point for the BS. Rather, it's the burner performance. Also, my understanding is that all grills can be just as messy, as the next. With Capital's IR grill I would expect better performance than with a flame grill. FWIW, the BS has an IR broiler that folks have raved about.

between Bluestar and Capital? Hmm, CAPITAL! Blue star DOES NOT have a 30" with a infrared-grill (up top not in the oven) .. Capital is the first of its kind to offer a grill on a 30" model. Also, they have an infrared glass broiler in the oven. Easier to clean than regular flame broiler. And they say it gets about 1600 degrees, just like a commercial broiler..
Plus the Capital looks a whole hell of a lot nicer than Bluestar.

I have cooked on all three and the TEK IR is the only gas grill that cooks as well as charcoal. It's advantages over charcoal are that it is quick to set up, easy to clean up and does an excellent job of creating the charcoal taste. As many here know, the flavor is created by the smoke from the fat striking the hot surface be it charcoal or something else. The higher the IR energy (from gas or charcoal) and the less the flame, the more smoke generated rather than being turned into additional flame. The TEK creates a great deal of smoke because the IR glass sits between the flame and the dripping grease. On older style IR burners there is still an open flame to ignite the grease drippings reducing the amount of smoke to add flavor. With charcoal, once the embers are glowing red, it is emitting a lot of IR and much less to no flame and hence produces a lot of smoke and flavor. I have owned the FireMagic and I would not purchase another. The burners are cast SS but they still do rust over time and the flavor grills wear out too. They are very hard to clean and the heat was not anywhere near as good as the advertisements. If you are the type that never clean a grill and don't mind a gritty looking grill it may not matter. I am the type that wants it to look clean and inviting each time and the self cleaning feature along with the dishwasher removal panels makes the TEK a breeze to clean and keep looking nice. For me that was worth a lot. The more conventional grills like the Firemagic, even with their ceramic infrared burner are not even a close match.

We went to a couple of barbeque places today and ending up buying the extra large Big Green Egg, and I think we will be very happy with it. Kevin thinks it will be great for parties, and now it will be even easier for us to cook for a crowd. Since we now have three charcoal grills, we can use separate grills for separate dishes which will make it easier for us to make multiple dishes at once, even if they require different temperatures. We also have the electric smoker, and I have to say that we get a more intense smoke flavor from that than we do from the charcoal - or at least it permeates the meat more. For smoking chilies, only the charcoal will do the job the way I want it. The BGE that we bought also has a pizza stone and can be used for grilling pizza - something that I've been wanting to do since first visiting the pizza making forum. We bought some outdoor lights for our pergola, and I think they will provide way more light than we required, but at least we can lower the wattage when we want to. I haven't bought anything for lighting the fountain yet because I want to have that installed by an electrician on an exterior wall of the house. I'm hoping to light much of the back yard that way and have it on a dimmer. I don't really want underwater lights in my fountain at this point but will talk with the electrician about that. I'm thinking that I will get my yard lit in stages and start off with getting some outdoor outlets installed at strategic points so that lights could be hooked up later. We went out for dinner this evening because I wanted sushi! We haven't assembled the Big Green Egg yet. Lars

This is an old thread, but I was just looking at these today and thought I would add my 2 cents for anyone else who might stumble across this in the future. On the patio doors I looked at, the spacer was aluminum/steel/silver colored and was just too noticeable. I can see how you could see through narrower grills (or see odd shadow/light patterns), but I don't think we would do the SDL even if they didn't cost extra.

Hi Everyone, We are upgrading our kitchen and I am interested in. 48 inch open burner stove. I am trying to decide between blue star and capital. I am wondering about evenness of the burners. I currently have a midrange GE stove and I cannot stand it because the burners heat unevenly. The rear half of the front left burner is significantly hotter than the front half. Is there a significant advantage to the star shaped burner vs capitals round burners with respect to evenness? I am also interested in how easy it is to control burner output. By this I mean how gradual are the burner attenuators programmed. On my current stove basically most of the control between high and low is actually between 2 and 3. From 3 to high there is not that much change in heat output. Also how low are all of the burners able to go. Any time I need to cook something on low do I have to move it to the summer burner or do all the burners get quite low? Last question is about how powerful is the griddle on the capital stove and do you find it particularly useful? Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

nietzche - have you seen the new versions of either? I haven't seen either of the new versions so it would be hard to tell which looks nicer. They are definitely different looks/styles. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

pictures speak a thousand words. Haven't seen the Precision in person; have seen their Performance series in person and the Blue Star in person. Capital are just so much more elegant and muscular at the same time, and have paid more attention to detail than the folks at Blue Star. No offense to the Blue Star pundits here, but I know good design when i see it.

Thanks for your replies, I guess it comes down to a matter of preference. My ultimate stove would be a the new model 30 inch capital with the infra-red grill but with bluestars four stovetop burners--ah well, one can dream can't they?

Well, what about getting a Blue Star and one of these (or some other type of outdoor infrared grill)? It would kinda/sorta cover all your requirements, and save you quite a bit of money.

I have both (RNB30 and the Turbo Sport), and I think it's a great compromise. Yes, I have to go outside to grill. BUT, these infrared grills create a HUGE amount of smoke! It's their operating temperatures -- they're literally incinerating grease, which results in flare-ups (if not careful) and copious, billowing clouds of grilling essence!

I'm eagerly awaiting the first reports from new Capital range/grill homeowners with under-performing hoods -- should be quite entertaining!

I was deciding between the Capital Precision and Bluestar 48" just recently... and I decided on the Bluestar for looks, believe it or not! The Bluestar now comes in 190 different colors--no extra cost. I think colored ranges and ovens are definitely coming back. (Just my own style prediction, we'll see. I like them either way :)

Yeah, when the OP talked about grilling, the smoke was the first thing I thought about as well. I think one of the members here said their 800cfm hood was barely adequate during grilling...anybody remember who that was?

I chose the Capital - it's sitting in my garage now. In our last house, we had a full size restaurant grill. The previous owner was a Texan who loved to barbecue. Whatever hood was there did a great job of taking care of the smoke. I can't imagine that the small grill on the Capital is going to cause more problems than the full size grill could have. Our GC ordered a custom hood made - I will post after we get to use it. I hope it works!

Fori, techinically the free color is a promo, but its been running for about 6 months now, so maybe it's becoming a standard option.

Personally I like the Capital burners. They all have the same capability which I find to be very convenient. I have seen the Precision and it is indeed very nice looking. As for price it can be ordered in a manual clean without the rotisserie for a substantial savings.

Hi all,
I am new to post. We are starting our kitchen remodel project. I have to look at capital, but have read almost everything on Blue Star posted here. I used to cook on a Garland when I catered. Blue star is just very similar. I am actually looking at Wolf vs. blue star because I love the infrared grill on wolf -- used that in a professional kitchen too. I want to know from the Blue Star people out there, how often do you used your grill on the 36inch? Does it need to heat up for a while to get the good sear? How are veggies on it?

I just don't hear much about the Blue Star grill and while it is not the only issue I am looking at, it is definitely one.

Also what is the minimum cfm hood you need on a 36 inch Blue star? I was looking at a 42 inch vent-a-hood with 900 cfm.
