Miele G5575 Dishwasher Questions

This is an offshoot of my original post about my new Miele. Can anyone who has the Dimension G5575xxxx or similar, or knows about Miele dishwashers please answer a few questions? I have only used this DW once so far. The answers are not in the book.

* The control panel's narrow rectangular readout screen on the top left door can show programming, time left, what stage of the cycle the DW is in, etc. Is it possible that the screen of the display shuts off when the DW door is closed and the DW is running?? The only way that I was able to get the display to turn back on to get time & cycle information was when I opened the door. Is this normal? If so, boo hoo!! (my other DW showed this info all the time)

* Is the top adjustable cutlery rack removable? Not a big deal, but it would be nice to take the rack to the silverware drawer.

I am going to answer my own questions!

After speaking with Miele, I found out that the readout display on the top of the door does NOT stay on when the door is closed. I'm really surprised by that since my GE Profile had that feature. So, the door needs to be opened in order for the display to come on, which tells at which part of the cycle it is along with how many minutes are left in the cycle.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to remove the silverware rack that I can see.

The display on our Bosch shut off as well when the door was closed. It did have a second, larger display on its front, though. Some dishwashers will even project a timer onto the floor.

The cutlery tray is easily removed. Just undo the two white stoppers that keep the rack from falling out when fully extended. You kinda have to squeeze them to get the white hooks to come out of the stainless tracks. Makes sense?

Miele DW don't have bugs by the time they get to the USA. The models have been in Europe and AustralAsia for years before they hit North America. Ditto what dee says re: models. The upgraded cutlery tray by itself from spare parts is $100 +/- by itself. Buy whichever one suits your needs (features) and wallet - they are both one of the best units on the market today. They are not replacing the series because of problems!

Your repair guy is all over the map. On one hand he says maybe temperature or low water, then goes on to say the Gel has a tendency to clog....which would have nothing to do with low water level or temperature. However, he has mentioned the things I, too, would focus on....except for the gel part. What you've just described here is most likely an obstructed drain line....which is pretty common. You got it partially cleaned out with your DWMagic and vinegar so it seems like your problem's solved. I suspect it isn't and will come back....it usually does. Suggest you take a minute and do this: Disconnect your drain line from its connection point under the sink. Get a good look in the drain line end and into the discharge connection tube. This will take minutes and will tell you a lot. Stick your finger in there and examine whatever clings to it. Whatever that is is the stuff that will be accumulating again and eventually causing the obstruction that's slowing your drain and leaving junk all over your dishes. After that, on your next load do check the water level in the machine after the fill is complete. Fill-solenoid problems are pretty common and easy/cheap to fix if that's a component of the problem. I'll bet its fine, but there's another easy check. Low water is another culprit that will, indeed, leave crud all over your dishes. I think that's probably OK because of your description of good results after your magic/vinegar cleanout. That's why I'm suspecting the drain line instead. From your description, I have a hard time accepting the "bad gel" theory. However, powder works fine, too so use what you want. Of course I'm sitting here at cyber-distance and haven't seen what you've seen so I need to back off a notch. However, your description appears to me to be tell-tale.

I've seen suggestions in the past of getting an extra cutlery tray and having a drawer made to fit. That way they can be switched out. That's a bit beyond my level of daily organization ability but it's been done here. Re the retrofitting: the Miele is (antss please check me here) needs to be 5/8-inch narrower than the standard 24" opening. How do I know? The cabinet person "assumed" on the first reno and I have a 5/8" gap between the sink base and the door panel which makes the DW much more audible than it should be. I'll have it adjusted when/if they come back to do other things here in future. On our second reno it was measured correctly and the Miele was nearly silent. I'd be sure to consult the specifications (download) and have copies for the cabinet people and contractor.

I had planned to get the Dimension but when the Lumen came out I went with that model. Same price as the old Dimension with some additional features. The Dimension dropped in price and lost a couple of features. I am very pleased with my selection. Quiet, Cleans great. I agree that the baskets are well constructed and fold down/reconfigure easily. I also agree the filter is very easy to remove for cleaning - the wash arms move freely out of the way.

Yeah. The older model La Perla did have two removable sections on the cutlery tray that could come out, but on my Diamante Plus it does not have that. As in the picture above, I'd have to remove the tabs if I wanted to take it out. But since the silverware drawer is opposite the dishwasher, I'd have no need to remove it.

I fail to see how the display turning off makes any difference? How are you supposed to see it with the door closed anyway, and what is it going to tell you that you don't already know?

The red light projected on the underside of the countertop an through the panel gap tells you it's running / finished / or has a fault.

Xedos...believe it or not I was able to see the time read out on my GE Profile just fine. There was probably a quarter inch of space or whatever at the top and it was enough for me to poke my head under a bit to see how much longer it had to go. It just gave me an idea of whether I should wait for it to finish and unload it before I went to bed or if I should just let it go and unload it in the morning. Also, if it was a holiday and I was doing multiple loads in one day, it was always helpful to know just how much time was left. Guess I got used to that convenience.
