A small portion of my basement wall (under the family room fireplace) is made of cinderblock. I painted it to look like brick, and it looks really cool. It is a lot of work and masking tape for the grout lines. One suggestion: do not paint all the "bricks" the same color. I first painted them all the same color (Sherwin-Williams "fired brick") and it looked OK, but not really like a brick wall. After looking at real brick walls, I realized that no two bricks in a wall are quite the same color. So I mixed part of the leftover paint with some leftover dark brown paint, and painted over some random bricks with that. It really looks a lot better now, and gives a much better impression of a brick wall. If I were doing it again from scratch, I would get several containers, mix up varying ratios of the two colors, and just pick from them at random as I painted. Before I painted the poured portion of the basement wall, I used a cold chisel to break off knobs of concrete that stuck out. You can find a cold chisel at any hardware store. Alex

Forget the fibreglass. It's only asking for trouble. Unless you can find Membrain in your area for use as an internal vapour barrier, use extruded polystyrene (XPS) attached to the wall, followed by batts between framing. Here is a link that might be useful: Understanding Basements

Frame a 2x4 wall up against it and drywall. Then you could add outlets or insulation if you wanted.

You're asking, can you add a 3" layer of footing on top of a 3" layer of footing that is already in place ...? Can we presume the finished footing is also wide enough? (It should stick out beyond the outer edges of the brick wall by about 6" each side. If it doesn't, add width to the whole footing in the second layer.) I say that that it will be okay. I wouldn't bother boring holes and adding vertical rebar between the layers. (Sheering of the layers is most unlikely. It's only going to matter if you have an earthquake big enough to destroy your house!) But 2 or 3 strings of 1/2" rebar in the footing running lengthwise would be a good idea. (It would aid against cracking but If the footing were to crack, it would keep the wall sections aligned.) Freshly wash the first layer free of all dirt before pouring the second layer, so that there is a good bond between them, and pour while the first layer is still damp (not wet.)
