Please help me, I am totally new at Apartments!

Hi! I am Ali, and I am currently living in San Antonio Texas, but I due to some uncontrollable things I have to move to Lawton, Oklahoma on August 10th.

Its pretty much something that JUST now popped up! And as you can imagine, this is not something easy to handle, especially seeing that I have never lived in an apartment before.

I looked ahead a little and found some apartments there that I could stay in, but I can't find any other information exept the phone number for the place. I don't care what the place is like as long as I can stay there for at least 6 weeks and I can get in by the 10th and its not overly expensive.

I only have enough money to pay for the apartment and my needs to live (food and the like), and ONE drive up there on the 10th of August.

So you can see where I am having a lot of trouble!

I was just hoping someone could give me some advice and maybe let me know what I am going to need to get an apartment.

I don't know how big Lawton is, which means it's probably not big enough for what I was going to suggest--and that's a youth hostel or something.

If you were moving to NYC, I'd suggest you get a room at the YMCA on the upper west side, and use it as a base while you figure out what to do, where you can afford to live, whether you'll be there longer, etc.

But those sorts of "single room occupancy" places, or youth hostels, aren't very common--they're usually only in large cities. Or, if they're present in smaller cities, they're kinda skeevy, bcs some of the folks in them will be people who can't get it together quite for unpleasant reasons. But, you might call the Chamber of Commerce and ask if there's any sort of residence hotel in town, or if they've got any ideas about finding a roommate situation.

and roommates.com had a share available for $230/month--most folks would rather have someone they know will be around for a while, but they might be able to work with you.

If you've got any connection w/ someone in the Army at Fort Sill, they might be able to help you find something--I don't know if anyone lives off post, but if they do, there might be an Army-run housing list of some sort.

I know I stayed for a while ON post in not-too-expensive housing bcs my Army brother signed me up; I don't know if that would work.You'd have to have an Army person to speak for you.

To get an apartment on your own (or even as a roommate), you need proof of an income source--in other words, a job, or someone WITH a job who will co-sign for you (in other words to legally commit that they will pay the rent if you can't).

6 weeks??? Perhaps look at living in a hotel. Many have weekly rates. It might be slightly higher than an apartment but if its only 6 weeks you wont have to move your belongings or clean. If its permanet it still may be smart to rent a hotel room for a week or two and find an apartment then. Good Luck!

You will have to put something up for them to climb the fence. Using green vinyl coated fencing is the easiest way to do it. Most of these will reach the top of the 6 foot fence and then cascade back down on themselves which is how most plants do in nature when they reach the top of their supports. I personally think this draping back down is attractive.

None of this is really lethal yet. If you would like you can email me your phone number and I will walk you through some of this. the rebar does not really have to follow everything exactly. sdkath, My husband and I are in the process right now. He even took on the task himself of the plumbing and electrical. that is the only thing we regret. Not because it was difficult, just a lot of work on his part working 10 hours a day and then coming home and working more. We started late July and are almost finished. What makes us think 20% is that our lowest quote was 38K and we are doing it for 20k. Ours is simple, free form, a couple rock ledges, play deck, seat, no water falls, etc. but we love it and it's going to be great for us. I agree, do your homework......Most subs are eager to help and they know all the steps them selves and know all the other subs. Take them a glass of tea, pull up a chair and talk to them about their work when they are there and pick their brain for other subs for the other steps. Schedule work for the days you can be there, Since ours was simple, each step was a one day process for each sub. A lot of PB's will help with owner builds now in our area because it's so popular. I think folks are catching on.....Make sure they have a license and get a signed agreement and quote before you start work. Never pay until all work is completed. If someone needs money up front they probably don't pay their bills and don't have the credit to get your materials. The most important part is a soils test if required in your area and good engineering for your plans. The rest of the steps are pretty simple.

Every color (OK, just to be safe-almost every color) can look amazing when decorated around and styled. I had so many yellow walls in my current place when I moved in-I made it work everywhere (but the master bedroom when the light was different and that very same yellow looked too dark, and drove me crazy until I repainted it). I suggest you live with it a little bit and then decide whether to repaint, where, and to what. I don't know where you live but here we were quoted 5000 paint job for the room with ceilings like yours, and it was several years ago. And you really need a pro for the height like this...ladders and all. You can pick a bit different shade for the kitchen if it bugs you already-it will still flow nicely even if it's different and more neutral..just be mindful of the undertone of that neutral so it doesn't clash with gold everywhere else. I have paler yellow with deeper yellow accents in living and dining, and more calmer and neutral tan in the family room-they work together quite well. The plan is partially open, so all colors are seen at once. These windows are really really cool. Do you plan to leave the build in next to them? I think it interferes a bit with their awesomeness so to say.
