High-pitched buzzing/humming noise from above

I've been hearing some high-pitched buzzing/humming coming from my upstairs neighbors' unit.

When it ends, it is followed by a loud bang. Before it starts I hear some fan or rotor blades shrieking.

The buzzing/humming sounds lasts for several minutes. It seems to come on at some regular intervals. It starts only around 9 p.m. every night.

I had approached my neighbors before about this noise but they pretend to not know about it.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it?

No idea, I'm afraid.

Does the noise bother you? Do you want them to stop making it? If that's the case, then go upstairs while the noise is happening and ask them nicely to please stop making it. Or only do it earlier in the day, or whatever solution will work for you. "I don't know what you are doing, but that noise I mentioned last week? It's happening now. Could you please figure out what is causing it and stop it? Thank you."

Bear in mind that in some apartment buildings, noise travels strangely. What seems to be directly overhead might actually be on one side, or upstairs and over one unit, something like that. But if you go up while the noise is happening, you will be able to hear if it is coming from that unit or not.

Or you could just live with it. Once I had upstairs neighbors who apparently dropped a bowling ball on their living room floor every night about 10 pm. Big thud of something falling, followed by a rolling noise. I never did figure out what it was, but it wasn't annoying enough to bother with trying to get it stopped.

camlan, yes, it is very disturbing. I didn't want to knock on their door since it started at 9 p.m. which I considered late in the day but I guess I don't have a choice.

A slight whining or high-pitched noise coming from the sprinkler valve is a sign of a small leak or slow leak. While this sound is sometimes accompanied by a telltale trickle of water, the leak may appear not in the exterior of the valve but in the valve shutoff. The sound comes from water channeled through a small hole, the way air is channeled through the stops of a whistle. A leak in the sprinkler valve, whether inside the mechanism or on its exterior, means the valve will require replacement. If a sound is present but no water is streaming out of the valve, try tightening the connectors joining the valve with the pipes before servicing. - This is what I read from a Google search. I ended up replacing it after trying the water pressure suggestion above.

Simple high school physics rules out the plumbing as the source of your problem. Sound is a form of mechanical energy which is generated by mechanical vibrations. If there is no flow of water there is no source of mechanical vibration therefore the plumbing cannot produce any sounds. At first I thought it might be remotely possible that you have a hot water circulation pump that is malfunctioning, but you stated that you turned off all the electric at the main and considering that a pump is electrically driven you have also ruled out a pump, or taking this to the next level, it also rules out any electrically operated solenoid valve, thus you have ruled out all the possibilities of sound from the plumbing.

This just happened to me. The sound is blaringly loud and low, and it woke me up around 6am and lasted for about 10 minutes. It sounds like it's coming from the apartment above, and it's loudest in the bathroom (no windows, it's in the center of my apartment). When it shuts off it sounds like a switch is flipped and it powers down quickly. It basically permeates my entire little apartment, but the sound is also really loud by the front door so it's hard to even say where it is coming from. I thought it might be a blender or something but it's not as loud in the kitchen. It drives me insane, only happens early morning so I assume my upstairs neighbor is using something that causes it. I thought maybe a shaver?!?! But nobody's shaver is THAT loud. Everyone talks about "the hum" and electronics, but this sound is so LOUD and coming from within the building. It's not coming from the windows.

To answer your question this is not normal. Are your renting this property? If so then your maintenance guy does not want to be bothered or spend the money to fix the problem. It sounds like the mechanism which changes the angle of the vanes is rattling. Some mini splits are able to oscillate the position of the vanes in order to help distribute the air. You may be able to turn off the oscillation with the remote control. Here is a video for the Mitsubishi remote control. Your unit may say Trane on it but I believe it is made by Mitsubishi. If this is not your remote then a model number or photo of the remote would help determine what you have.

Well, yes, 9 am is late in the day. But that's for a social call. If a neighbor is making noise loud enough to bother you, there's nothing wrong in confronting them about it at any hour of the day--2 am is fine if they are waking you up.

Just be polite, but firm. "I've asked you about this noise before. I'm hearing it now. Are you doing anything that would cause this loud buzzing noise?" You may be able to hear it immediately when they open the door. Or both of you may realize that the noise is coming from some other apartment.

But if they claim to know nothing of the noise and you are pretty sure it's coming from their unit, the best way to deal with it is to ask them while the noise is occurring.

When you are sure that the noise is theirs, if they still refuse to do anything about after you have asked them nicely to stop or move it or deaden the sound somehow, then you move on to the landlord.

Oh, and document everything. Every time you hear the noise, and every time you speak to the neighbors about it and what their response is.
