Mystery Lamp

Hi

I was on holiday in Budapest and I saw this lamp in one of their "Ruin Clubs". I have been on the lookout for one since, but I have never seen one in the UK. Can someone give me a pointer towards the "type" of lamp it is, plus an idea of country of origin. Maybe an idea of age too?

It's not easy to see much detail about the lamp from your picture.
Is the shade paper? Skin? Glass? Does it hang from a bracket? The ceiling or a stand on the floor?
Do a google image search for things like hanging lamp or glass shade lamp or panel shaded lamp and see if you can find a picture.

Hi Linda

I believe the shade was fabric of some kind and hangs from a wire from the lamp's bracket. All floor standing.
Sorry about pic quality - it was pretty dark. Added another one which is slightly better.

YEP! You've got one of those little techno bugs lurking in your Jeep's electronics system. They show up every now and then to get your attention and drive you crazy. Then they hibernate just long enough for you to think that everything is just fine. I've had one in my Buick for several years. Someone who had the electric blanket under the mattress pad said that they turn it off before climbing into bed, but I feel that a blanket that was built to lie on top of the occupants is part of an entirely different ballgame when the bodies move, bang and bump over it all night long, whether it's turned on or not. It wasn't built to stand such abuse, and will probably get damaged, eventually, which will probably have an effect when the power is turned on, later. ole joyful

If that date, 1880 - 1890 is true, it would be an extremely early lamp. In the 1870s, Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison working independently, made the first incandescent electric bulb that could last for more than a few hours. At first, only a few persons used incandescent lamps. As electric power became more widespread, usage grew to significant numbers by 1885. Electric arc lighting predates incandescent but was not generally used in homes. Sir Humphrey Davy made the first arc lamp in 1809. Based on these data, it is my opinion that electric lamps made for incandescent bulbs in homes did not exist before 1870.

I wonder if this isn't a reworking of an old bridge lamp -- a little creative wiring or a good yank on the socket, and voila! You could try adapting an old lamp to replicate this.

You might also try googling "wrought iron bridge lamp pendant" or something similar.
