Rose didn't produce a single tomato

or even a single flower. I planted 26 varieties this year and Rose was the only one that produced nothing. The strange thing is it is the only plant that is still green and growing. The only thing I did different with this tomato, besides planting it later than the others, was when I was digging the planting hole I came across a pocket of bio-char soil that was a rich black color and I could see bits of charcoal mixed in with the soil.

Has anyone else grown Rose, and did you have low or no production from it?

Hey Californian; I grow Rose every year, except last year as I was away working on a film. Rose is a late variety for me. It is a "skimpy" producer of really large 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. dark pink/red beefsteaks. I have found that plants from saved seeds generally produce better. I bought my Rose seeds from Clemson/edu. The taste alone is the reason to grow this variety. I usually find 8 to 12 seeds in each tomato near the top.

I've grown multiple plants from two sources. It usually has a bit of a slow start and one to three fruit per truss, but overall counts of fruit were consistent with similar varieties (20-25 green fruit counted when first fruit ripens).

Is it the fruiting 'Wonderful' variety? It has single flowers There are others that have prettier double petaled flowers but don't produce fruit. Mine are over 50 yrs. old & last spring after it had just begun to leaf out we got a late frost & no one's here in the City had any fruit! This year the bushes ('8 ft. 'trees'!)are loaded with flowers & golfball size fruit already. What amazes me is that the bushes will flower all summer with different fruit sets/times but in the Fall ALL the fruit ripens at the same time & the same size?! We bought a 'Wonderful' plant in the Fall x Home Depot for our son & it sat in the garage all winter but he set it out this Spring & is growing well (about 2 ft. tall now) but will be a few years I think before setting fruit. Have patience (I grew mine old ones x seed! x a store-bought fruit!)

Many roses sold in the US are grafted onto another rose used as rootstock. The rose most commonly used is Dr. Huey, which is a once-blooming (in the spring), dark red, climber. I think your climber is Dr. Huey. It blooms on last year's growth, when you "cut back those tips", there went this year's blooms, you won't get any this year. I think your Mr. Lincoln is "suckering", which is the term we use when Dr. Huey starts to grow. You can tell because Huey's canes are a lot thinner than Mr. Lincoln's, and grow fast. If Dr. Huey's canes are allowed to grow a lot, the grafted variety, Mr. Lincoln, weakens, and you end up with an entire plant of Dr. Huey. If you regularly cut back this plant in the spring, you've cut off the part that will bloom this year. You can try to dig down and find the start of the Dr. Huey canes and rip them off. I agree with Len511, I think the plant was too dry when it was sprayed. The first and third photos definitely look like spray burn to me. The second photo could be a fungal disease, could just be old leaves dying off (if they were at the bottom of the plant). I would water them well and leave them for a week. You may need a fungicide. My question for both the garlic and onions problem is Does anything grow well in your soil? If you can grow good tomatoes and greens, etc. but alliums don't produce, you have some sort of soil born disease. If not much else grows there or you haven't tried anything else, you may be dealing with a nutrient disorder or poor drainage. Both of these can be easily helped with some effort on your part.

There are multiple tomatoes that are yellow and pear shaped, but there is a variety called Yellow Pear, too. Sometimes people call them all Yellow Pear, kind of like some people call most pastes Roma, but Roma is a variety, too. Some other yellow pear varieties include these: * Medovaya Kaplya (tr. Honey Drop; this is very sweet) * Fargo * Beam's Yellow Pear * Medovaja Kapiyia * Yellow Trifele (and/or Japanese Yellow Trifele); this is orange, really If you like pear tomatoes, you might be interested in other pear tomatoes that aren't yellow, such as these: * Green Pear * Chocolate Pear * Cherokee Green Pear * Aladdin's Lamp * Pakenham Pear * Cartago Pear * Japanese Black Trifele * Beduin * Austin's Red Pear * Indigo Pear Drops (PVP) * Evan's Purple Pear * Blue Pear * Red Cluster Pear (multiflora) I've grown five in that last list and two in the first. I have tried growing Rose because of its rave reviews, but it really suffers from nematodes, or whatever its problem was, and I never got any fruit in any year. It made the "cut" list after 3 tries. I guess Rose is just an East Coast girl!

I grew Rose once and it was super-duper late and I only got a few tomatoes, but those that I got were fantastic. I don't know where in CA you are, but didn't you have an unseasonably cool summer like many of us did? Where I live it was a good 10-20 degrees cooler than it normally is the entire season. I think Rose is finicky even during the best of conditions, but this summer was especially trying.

I grew 2 Rose this year and they did great. They were on schedule with other similar plants, and the in ground Rose was the largest of my Beefsteak size plants. Here's a pic from the weekend:

The cage is 9 feet tall. Fruit quality was excellent. I also grew Brandywine and the fruits were nearly identical, but Rose produced more and seemed healthier. I started both from Wintersown.org seed.

I'm in North-Eastern PA and we had an excellent tomato season overall, so it's tough to judge anything based on just this year and a couple of plants.

For any variety in any season performance in any geographic location can range from wonderful to lousy to no blossoms, no fruits at all, and all of that even if a person has the correct seeds for the variety.

Californian, the major reason for no blossoms at ALL on a plant, which is what you're saying, when your other varieties are blossoming and setting fruit, is what I call a mule plant.

Those plants, which are not that common, have a genetic defect that doesn't allow them to form blossoms and they tend to grow large barren plants.

Many years ago I was trialing some varieties for SSE that they had received from Marie Danilenko, their contact in the former USSR, now the CIS, and one of them was a variety called Limmony.

I had two plants out there and one of them performed wonderfully and the other never had a blossom at all.

One can also see mule plants in commercial tomato fields of hybrids that are mules b'c most large scale commercial farmers grow determinate varieties and the mules appear as huge plants with no blossoms. I could always spot them in the commercial fields of my farmer frind Charlie where I used to grow my tomatoes for many years.

I hate to see any variety condemned just b'c it didn't perfom well for a given person in a given year and now I'm making a general comment, not talking specifically about the variety Rose.

Just my opinion.

I planted an Orange Strawberry for the first time this year, it grew very tall and had sparse flowers but absolutely no fruit. I tried shaking the cage, then the actual flowers to no avail. Nothing was special or different about the hole,soil,fertilizer,water,how or where it was planted vs my other plants that produced normally. It was the only O.S. I had too.

Never happened before to me, hope it never does again.

Sorry you didn't have good luck w/Rose. I tried it this year from seed and was surprised that it produced the largest (1 - 2lb) tomatoes in the garden. Nice eating, etc. but too late maturing to devote space again next year; will devote that space to my never ending quest to grow a short season Marzano. Always have a crop, but just when they start kicking production into high gear, a cold north wind starts to blow...
