Polliwogs in December?

We just moved into a house with a pond. So many things to explore and learn!!! Well I was pulling out some leaves and willow twigs and in the bunch of debre was huge polliwogs. This time of year? In New York State where it is freezing cold? The next day I saw a stock type bird in the pond. He probable saw them too. I thought frog eggs developed only in the spring and than the wogs grow their legs and become frogs in the warm water. Whats going on?

Hi Joyster. I think what you have are bullfrog tadpoles. They often take two years to mature to a frog. They will survive fine through the winter. Bill

Thanks Bill. I can't believe that I never knew that. It makes sence because they are very big. I also have perch, bluegills, and bass in the pond. This year we had a very hot and dry summer. The pond got very low and at one point, a large amount of fish died. Mostly bluegills. We aerated the best we could and then the rains came and got things moving again. We have lots of toads and other frogs around here. This summer will be our first year here and I am looking forward to learning and taking pictures of the wildlife. Thanks again. Joy
