hibritten antique china hutch appraisal help

Hello, I found this site and I was hoping someone from this forum could shed some light on my problem. My mom died the day before christmas eve, and have no room for this China hutch, I think its a hibritten it was stamped in one of the drawers. My dad said my mom got it off her dad he bought it for 10,000 not sure if that's true. I would think that was back atleast 30 40 years ago. Not sure if it was new then or older for that transaction, I have a photo if anyone knows what it is or the next step I could do to determine what it is and selling value would be great, Its in mint condition. A $10,000 china cabinet? I somehow don't think so. It looks like a nice piece of furniture, though.

Hibriten was a company in Lenior, NC, and was bought up by Bernhardt Furniture Company in the 70s.

Maybe one too many zeros. Just saw an ad for a Hibriten dining room set on Craigslist which comprised table, 6 chairs, hutch & buffet for $1300.

That is a lovely hutch. It's really hard to estimate a value because they can vary significantly by region and frankly items often sell for a fraction of their apprasal value or worth on Craigslist every day. eBay seems to set higher prices since they can command a wider set of potential buyers--esp. if one is willing to provide shipping; however, many would-be buyers may be deterred by the cost of shipping. Also, keep in mind that what an antique store will charge to sell is not the same as what they would purchase it for--same as a consignment store, hence why many people turn to Craigslist to sell their antiques. I bought a few of my better quality antiques from a company that specializes in running estate sales at the sellers' home over a single weekend and then gets a take of the proceeds from the owners--still at a fraction of their worth. It all depends on finding a buyer who wants it bad enough to pay full price. To me, I think the real value in this is that it is a family heirloom. It's a shame the person who inherited this now has to pay for half the appraised value in order to keep it and the person who treasured it, no longer has possession. But I am sure you already know that.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas and opinions. Here is a little more info. It's actually all one piece and not a top and bottom and there were never doors on it. There is a label somewhere that says "True Grand Rapids-Cabinet Making Certified" although they advertised it as being in excellent condition it's definitely not. I like the examples that were posted and my family room has a side table and coffee table that are distressed off white (Broyhill Attic Heirloom series) but the wall behind it will be a tan color when the drywall is finished in a week or two, the floor it will sit on will be honey oak and the chairs around the table are black. My table actually matches the color of the piece now but I always have a table cloth on it these days (I've got 4 kids). I've kicked around the idea of going barn red but either black, off white, or red, I'm just not sure the formal piece will look right going rustic although some of the examples above have that same formal look and they painted up very nice. I'll try to post pictures of the surroundings tomorrow. Thanks again for the ideas and opinions.

Pimento. I'd paint it pimento. I painted a mirror frame with Krylon pimento spray paint as a base coat for a later application of gold leaf. I almost left it pimento. It was a great color. I'd leave your china hutch just as it is. It shows character and a willingness to ignore trends. It's a useful piece of beautiful furniture. Just use it. War story. I ended up with two very fine, very elegant antique mahogany dining room tables. I decided to sell one. I really didn't need it. After a discussion with a few of the antique dealers in my area and an offer of $500 for one, I decided to make one of them my breakfast room table. It used to be worth multiple thousands. If the table is only worth $500 in the resale market, I may as well use it as everyday furniture. What am I saving if for? So, I have a very elegant Chippendale flame mahogany table in my breakfast area. We eat on it every day. Use your china, too. It's worth nothing. It should be used and enjoyed. I like pimento.

It's beautiful, of course. It is fine furniture, but not worth 10,000 then or now. From what I can see on the web, similar pieces are bringing from $900 the piece to $1300 for a comparable complete dining room set. One furniture appraiser commented that it's ashamed that Bernhart Hibriten doesn't bring what it should on the secondary market.

I have seen $10,000 china cabinets....they were made by Kittenger...I even bid on one! LOL!
But that's not a $10,000 china cabinet.

Hibritten had some very expensive lines in the 70's They were bought out and the lines turned more like Thomasville.
They were always better then Stanley,and American of Martinsville. I have seen some of their best chinas go for near 10k and they were massive. John Wittcomb(sp) was the most expensive we carried and china alone was over 30k. The china set sold for 65k.

HIBRITTEN WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE FURNITURE SOLD IN 60'S AND 70'S AS MY GRANDFATHER WAS IN THE FURNITURE BUSINESS.
MY MOTHER'S DINING ROOM TABLE HAS 4 LEAVES,(WHICH MEASURES 120") TWO ARM CHAIRS, 6 SIDE CHAIRS, WITH BOX SEATS AND TO THIS DAY THE UPHOLSTERY STILL LOOKS LIKE NEW! THE CHINA HUTCH WAS 76" LONG 84" HIGH AND A SEPARATE BUFFET WAS ALSO 76" THAT AT THE TIME WAS $10,000.00 AT COST AND MARK-UP WAS 110%

I WOULD GET SEVERAL APPRAISALS. OR BETTER YET MAKE SOME ROOM FOR IT AND HAVE SOME WONDERFUL FAMILY MEMORIES, BECAUSE NO ONE WILL APPRECIATE IT LIKE YOU!
