Black Zebra or Black Prince

I'm trying to order from one seed house (Cottage Gardener) and this is not a promo for them. They don't have Black Zebra but have Black Prince. Is there much of a difference and how much. I'm trying to get a multi colored spectrum for a salad presentation.

Red and Yellow Pear, Sungold, Stupice, Green Zebra, and something purple. Could go with Black Cherry from another supplier that also offers Black Zebra.

Can't you just see the fruit in a bowl sliced with basil and EVOO on the table with sheep or goat cheese? Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella would be the best if you can find it. And donÂt forget the crusty bread to dunk in the juices.

By the by ~ why do cherry toms take so long to ripen, 80 days?

In my opinion, Black Prince was very productive, just "ok" in taste, and was not disease tolerant.
I'd grow with another black variety:
Black from Tula ...
Now thats an OUTSTANDING black variety in every way ~

I looked up the Black from Tula.
"Russian heirloom from Tula. Largest of the blacks with 3-4", slightly flattened, oblate, dark brown to purple fruit with deep green shoulders. Deliciously outstanding, rich, slightly salty, smoky-fruit flavor.!!"

It sounds right. Not too big and the flavor sounds good. I'll put it on my list. I can get it from the seed house I am using too.

"Out of these choices which one would you grow & why?" Cherokee Purple: Best balanced old fashioned sweet wine flavor with just a trace of acid zing. Large tomatoes with some smaller fruit toward the end of the season. Relatively disease and insect tolerant. Robust plant habit yet not uncontrollably rangy. Fruit is dense, meaty, soft but not mushy, and seeds are not all that noticeable. Black Krim: A week earlier than Cherokee Purple, consistently large fruit, but not as complex or deep a flavor as Cherokee Purple and more prone to concentric cracks. Another drawback is Black Krim doesn't seem to ripen from the core outward and sometimes leaves a rather hard center when the rest of the tomato is ready to pick. Also has more open and larger seed cells with more seed and gel than Cherokee Purple. Nyogous: Since you mentioned canning, Nyogeous will yield plenty of smaller, rounder, smaller, more blemish-free fruit than the larger Cherokee Purple and Black Krim. The one that is not on your list yet is superior to any on your list is Indian Stripe.

Lynnie, is that you? I haven't checked in on this forum in ages. I changed my GW name at some point (and I may very well go back to Ms. Ann Thorpe). I think when I said the black tomatoes did better for me in cool conditions, I think I meant that when I was just growing tomatoes in my backyard, which is very near Lake Michigan (days and nights about the same chilly temperature seemingly until high summer), the black tomatoes seemed for some reason more willing to give me more fruit than the other colors I tried. Now that I grow my tomatoes in a community plot a couple miles west, I get more daytime heat and richer soil--and everything is more productive and better-tasting. I haven't grown Black Bear, but it sounds good. I'm not nuts about the taste of Black Zebra, but one of the years I grew it, it was insanely productive. And it is pretty. So pretty, it's a shame it usually goes into sauce.

I just received the seeds I ordered, but instead of Big Zebra, the packet says Black Zebra and the description sounds like something totally different than Big Zebra. We really love the flavor of Big Zebra. Has anyone out there grown both varieties that can tell me are they similar in taste? **** If you received a wrong variety as you note, then the first thing to do is to notify the company you ordered from b'c Big Zebra and Black Zebra are two entirely different varieties. I've linked below to Tania's Tomato data base for Big Zebra and many of the seed sources for Big Zebra that show for 2010 will no doubt be offering it again for 2011. Tania hasn't had time to update all the varieties at her data base for 2011 in terms of seed sources. But you really should let the company you ordered from know that they made an error and ask them to send you Big Zebra, which is what you ordered and they would have a record of that order I assume. Jayvee That is very nice set-up for your plants! Back to 'Black Prince': *It is potted little too low in the pot - there is lots of space between top level of the soil and top of the pot, plant is sitting too much inside. While not a huge problem, this decreases air circulation slightly, especially in hot and perhaps more humid climate. Every little thing adds up... *There is no need for such large pot. It holds too much soil, and if it's not so well draining - too much moisture for too long. *New plants should be acclimatized to good sunlight - usually, it is difficult to know where was plant before the purchase. Most succulents like full sun, but from the color of your plant (quite a bit of green in the center) it looks like it spent some time just prior to you buying it in lower light (this plant is typically have dark color thru-out). It is best to put plant in semi-shade for few days, moving it into more and more sunlight gradually (every 3-5 days or so). *Well-draining potting mix and drainage holes in container are important - plant could be watered well when needed, and extra water will drain. I have only grown Black Prince, but would like to try the Black from Tula as well for comparison. I really like it (read: my family did - I don't actually really like any tomato.) But with a sprinkle of salt, it was good in my taste tests. I had a weird growing year, but Black Prince was definitely one of my better plants for production. Black Cherry I think is even better tasting, than BP. I almost liked it, along with Galina's Yellow (another cherry). Those are the two, that if I had to eat tomatoes naked, it would be.
One way I actually do like to eat them, is a simple salad.
Mix in the basil, pinches of sea salt, loads of fresh garlic, splash of olive oil, now that is tasty. And it's great as a bruschetta topping too. And using all different colored tomatoes make it look so fantastic.

Black cherry is on my list. Like a coloured variety for a tom salad. Black cherry, Sungold, Yellow pear, Red pear and Green zebra. All will be new to the mix except Sungold which for me is early and busting with taste.

The pics are great but the taste is lacking even after licking the screen. :>) YUM !
I know you like Tula but maybe to big for what I want. If it was 1/4 'd maybe that would fit. What do you know about Black zebra or Black plum or would that be too much with Black cherry and the above mentioned?
