Tips on growing better boy for the first time.

Hey im trying my luck at growing better boy in a 5gallon maybe bigger square container.Wondering if i need to pinch suckers pinch first flowering stem and so on thanks.

I am jumping in so I can watch this post
I'm going to put holes in the bottom of the bucket then stack it into another 5 gal bucket with slit on the side so it will be off the ground and it will get air circulation at the bottom...

I have found from playing last year even though the heat and worms killed mine pinching suckers take away from the plant production of sugar that is needed to feed and grow the top of the plant... next year I will not prune anything

Like all plants, a tomato is a solar-powered sugar factory. For the first month or so it's in the garden, all of the sugar it produces is directed towards new leaf growth. During this stage, tomato plants grow very rapidly, doubling their size every 12 to 15 days. Eventually, the plants make more sugar than the single growing tip can use, which signals the plant to make new branches and to flower. This usually happens after 10 to 13 leaves have expanded, at which time the plant is 12 to 18 inches tall. In the next few weeks, the entire character of the tomato plant changes. If unsupported, the increasing weight of filling fruit and multiple side branches forces the plant to lie on the ground (see Staking and spacing options). Once the main stem is horizontal, there is an increased tendency to branch. Left to its own devices, a vigorous indeterminate tomato plant can easily cover a 4- by 4-foot area with as many as 10 stems, each 3 to 5 feet long. By season's end, it will be an unsightly, impenetrable, disease-wracked tangle

Ok thanks i just got mine from the nursery today should i cut leaves of that have brown spots on em i dont think its a disease just a bruise.Because this is my final go at growing toms ive had no luck at all.I pinched the suckers and the bottom 2 main leaves of mine.Its about 1 foot tall at the moment with 2 tiny trusses of flowers.I will be puting them into a pot when the weather is good.

My musa basjoo grew to about 4 feet the first year, from a seedling in spring. I think that bananas in general grow quicker planted directly in the ground than in a pot (providing you have good soil). I basically put composted manure in the soil and then used miracle grow during the season. As I wouldn't have a chance overwintering mine outdoors, I dug out of the ground, potted, and kept in a bright window for the winter. Full sun is best but my window was a north window with not much sun. Anyways, I watered pretty sparingly (as the plant wasn't active in growth) and didn't fertilized, and sprayed every once in a while with neem oil and water (as a precaution against bugs). So now they are back outside planted in a flower bed. The only bad thing is when they adjust back to outside, the leaves it grew indoors pretty well get tattered in the wind, sun burnt and eventually yellow and die, but the new leaves it gets once it's used to full sun are stronger and nicer looking. I think fivemeows is somewhat in error. I am in upper NY zone 4a so you have to treat Lilies differently than I do. First of all Lilies are quite strong plants. BUT they can not take being totally water logged for a long period of time. Planting them next to a wall MAY keep them water logged from your roof run-off if it rains a lot. And you get rain. I'd plant them somewhere besides right next to the wall. Second, Lilies being like Tulips and DAFFodils NEED to be frozen for a wintering period to regrow each year. You will need to dig them up after the foliage turns brown and place in a non-growing substance like sawdust then put them in the freezer for 6-8 weeks. 12 weeks if you like. Then you can replant them outside they will regrow. being in the snow country I don't have to dig mine up. But you can leave DAHLIAS outside all year where I can not.

Sam, if these are raised beds (or just inground beds), then you do not want to add a potting soil. Potting soils are designed specifically for container growing and are unnecessarily expensive to add to a raised bed or inground garden plus add nothing beneficial to assist with the growth or productivity of plants grown in this manner. So no potting soil, no perlite :-) If the previous owners said the beds were ready to go, I might try them as-is before making any changes. Otherwise, just adding some good quality organic matter to the beds (compost) should provide all the supplementation required. As to what crops to start out with now, you might want to see what locals suggest - try posting that question on the California Gardening forum. In my area (a bit further north), fall planting is restricted to cool season crops - pretty much anything in the cabbage family, greens (the spinach should be fine), some root crops, late peas and onions and garlic. It just doesn't get hot enough this late in the season to encourage the proper development and fruiting of warm season crops like squashes, okra or green beans, which are normally summer (not fall) growing plants. But your climate might be more receptive to these types of crops so check with local growers to confirm.
