toads over winter...?

I found a fat toad by our front door today & put it in the garden but afraid that in the Spring when I dig up the garden again I will hit it if it has buried itself into the garden soil! I also found some strange holes in a flower bed & when I put the end of the hose down in the holes, two big eyes popped out of the flooded hole... another toad!! I left it alone as I figured this was its den for the winter. I wonder if there is some sort of 'house' made that I could buy or make so the toads would use that to hibernate instead of the garden? Would more than one hibernate together? I love to have these new inhabitants of my yard & want to make sure the dogs don't get to them & that they will stay in the garden area which is fenced. And I promise I won't flood them with the garden hose again !
