This is the thread i was looking for when i came across the one about the cesanthes (or however that's spelled). This person donated several of these roses for Horticulture's plant sale and we sold most of them. I had a couple left and planted one for myself, and eventually sank the other one into the ground in its pot for the winter. Yesterday a woman in our community who was named Theresa died. Her granddaughter goes to our school and she loves to garden. In the spring, i'll lift the rose and give it to her so that she can plant it in memory of her grandma. :)

it could also be the food...cause my one male..I believe he was a sanke was loosing his black and I changed food and his black started to come back but then he jumped out of my pond and I lost him. I'm gonna post a pic of my female and the other male I have cause I'm having problems IDing them cause I didn't get them from a store, I got the from my grandfather who was a koi breeder for a while until someone poisoned his water and he lost all his koi...and they were all huge; the biggest one was almost 3 feet.

annz3, you live in the Ithaca area? (I'd subconsciously noted your mentioning that but forgot to comment). I have a kid who decided to spend undergrad years there. He had a fabulous experience - are you or a family member involved with one of the two colleges in town? We loved going to visit and enjoyed both the town and the surrounding area. Though you'll understand, this thin blooded Californian restricted visits to fall and spring. It's a beautiful area and there seemed to be lots to do.

Now that we have identified this as a Beauty Leaf Tree (Calophyllum), I have a followup question. I have one of these trees outside my front gate. But beyond the back line of my property, between the edge of pavement and my wood fence, I have this tree all over. This is an area about 40' long and 18' wide, and it's completely crowded with this tree. I did some counting today, and within this 40'x18' area, I have three large ones where the trunks are over 18" in diameter. I have about fifteen with trunks between 8" and 10", and I have numerous (several dozens) between 4"-8". Altogether I think I have over forty beauty leaf trees in various sizes growing in this small area. It's so thick and dense I cannot get inside this cluster of trees. It drops A LOT of fruits/seeds around this time of the year and previously owners just let them go crazy. I am trying to decide if I should cut back the small trees and over time get back to just the three large mature ones, or leave it alone and let it be? Thoughts?
