Need help to ID a snake

Hi,

I found a snake caught on the glue board in the garage. Looked almost 2-3 feet and am positive it is a garden snake.

I have taken pics of it but not sure if I can upload them here. Appreciate any suggestions on how to do it or I can mail the pics out to anyone who can help me. Thnx

Please carefully remove it from the glueboard.

And don't put glueboards out where non-targeted animals (birds, snakes, etc.) can get stuck on them.

So glad that Hissy has found a good temporary home. I've always loved snakes and have had them as pets since I was a child. Later, when I was in grad school and living in an apartment just off campus, my much younger brother brought a rat snake home from scout camp. Unfortunately, my father, who was terrified of snakes, announced that either the snake went or he would go, so naturally I took him off my brother's hands and installed him in a nice herpetarium in my apartment (at which point I discovered just who my friends were and weren't!) Kaa (as I named him, from Kipling of course) stayed with me until I had to move to another location, at which point I found a new home for him.I would love to have a snake pet again, but now I'm in a New York City apartment and haven't the room it would need. I'm hoping that Hissy will find a wonderful new home. Thanks to you for being so kind in rescuing him even though you weren't familiar with snakes!

Hi, Karalynn! What a little beauty! Juvenile snakes can be tricky, but I THINK this is a yellow rat snake. I'm going to post a link to the pictures over on the herp forum to get a more expert opinion. What I CAN tell you is that it is harmless, and definitely not a rattler of any kind, a coral snake, copperhead nor cottonmouth. As to why it was so docile, I suspect it was cold. My son fished a banded water snake out of his pond one morning last week, when the pond had ice around the edges, and it was almost in a stupor. He put it in a sunny spot to warm up, and it probably would have died if he hadn't seen it listlessly trying to swim to the edge of the pond. Later in the day, this baby might have put up a much stronger protest at being handled. Will let you know what Wayne, Mike or one of the other REAL snake experts says, but my best guess is a baby yellow rat snake. Thanks for sharing the pics!! Marcia

ID-ing Snakes In The Garden - Coral Snake

Marcia, Please help me find out what kind of snake I came across today. While I was at the local dog park (near Orlando) I came across a yellow with black stripes snake. It looked to be between 3.5-4 feet long and did not appear at first glance (that was all I gave it out of fear) to be shiny. I was about 3 feet from it and didn't know it until my dog almost stepped on it. She obviously didn't see it either. The snake seemed a pit peeved about the whole thing but it decided not to attack and to slowly slither towards ME to get away from my dog. Needless to say, I took off in a different direction real quick and hollered for my dog to follow. I am not like you or others on this site. I am not a fan of snakes and am extremely afraid of them. Although, I don't mind the black racers that seem to have taken up permanent residence in MY back yard and they love to procreate often (or so it seems). I have seen a lot less field rats since the racers moved in and that makes me very happy. Anyway, can you help me figure out what this snake was? I have spent hours and hours online tonight trying to find it and just can't seem to find anything that looks like it. I am guessing that it is not dangerous to me or my dogs??? I am scared to take my dogs back through those woods that they so dearly love. As soon as I told them, "No more woods until the snakes are gone again," they "told" me to find it if it was dangerous or not and if it isn't that they want to go back again. So that is mostly why I am asking you for your help. We all love the walks but I am afraid of the snakes. Please help me feel safer about going back. Thanks in advance for your help.

The timing of this thread is uncanny. I checked out the new postings this A.M. (this forum is usually my first stop) and read this thread. Midday I was in the garage potting up new cuttings and saw what I thought was a large worm in the concrete expansion joint. Looked more closely and, remembering the pictures here, recognized my "worm" as a Florida brown snake. I urged it on its way out of the garage by gently touching the end of its tail with a pencil. It very slowly headed toward the open garage door. Then it decided it didn't care for the pencil and gathered up its little body as if to strike. I backed off but when it seemed reluctant to move out I switched to a broom (my hand proved too close to the pencil to suit me). I ask austex05 to e-mail me photos and it looked like a Texas Garter snake to me.
I was told that the snake could not be removed, which is too bad but lets not lecture too much. I think we might be a little flattered that Austexo5 came to the site for a little help a IDing snake that he or she didn't really want to kill but was really uncomfortable around.
I wish someone else with a little more experience would take a look at the snake and either confirm or correct my ID. If someone wants to e-mail me I'll see if I can forward the photos.

Warren,

You were close. It was an Eastern Black-necked Garter Snake rather than a Texas Garter Snake. Both species are native to Texas and fairly similar in appearance. The Eastern Blacknecked Garter Snake is definitely among the prettiest subspecies of garter snakes in my opinion. If I had to rank subspecies of garter snakes in attractiveness I'd go San Francisco Garter 1st, Eastern Blacknecked Garter 2nd and Western Plains Garter 3rd.

Wayne, ina ddition to the subspecies you mentioned, I like Blue Striped Garter snakes too, just because I haven't seen many snakes with blue-ish coloration.

Thanks to all of those who responded to my query in helping me identify it. Like I mentioned in the email (thanks wduzak for your support) I do NOT hate snakes but I am very uncomfortable around it). The glue boards are for catching any thing that tries to come into the garage. I have a young one who is on the verge of running. I live near a green belt where there is construction going on and I am almos sure of seeing more of these. This is the fifth one caught. I have seen a rattlesnake as well. If anyone of you is around austin and would be able to rescue snake which gets caught on a glue board i would gladly give it to you'll. But I hate to say this but the glue boards are staying where they are and I cannot compromise on that. Thanks once again for you help. The snake did look pretty though.
