Global Warming and Our Hostas
Comments (10)To get back to Dougald's question about what is the optimum climate for hostas, I've noticed that Tony Avent's PDN catalog (his zone is 7) lists hosta sizes about one size lower than most northern nurseries list them. I'm wondering if this is a marketing ploy or will my hostas never achieve the size of hostas that hibernate longer through colder winters? I've been siting hostas in beds dug for their mature size as I'm not getting younger while these babies grow up and moving big hostas in five years isn't on my list. Any observations from others familiar with growing conditions further south? Kathy...See MoreGlobal warming affect on southampton and long island.
Comments (6)It's hard to look at just trends to predict global warming. Scientists who come up with future world temperatures because of Global Warming come up with those numbers by using complex formulas and forecasting models (and those numbers still aren't accurate). Plus even with Global Warming, Earth still goes through trends of warmth and cooling every few decades. In the 80s we were in a cooler trend, now we are in a warmer trend so based on that we might see cooler temperatures in the next few years (but if Global Warming is really effecting climate then we probably wont get as cold as the 1980s). Chamaedora Radicalis is frond hardy into the mid teens when established. The trunks are pretty thin so if you wrap it with burlap you'r probably going to see that wrapping the fronds is probably going to happen anyways. Some Chamaedorea radicalis are not trunking so those will need to be mulched and covered. I like the look of C. Microspadix better, but C. Radicalis is supposed to be a few degrees hardier especially the fronds themselves. -Alex...See MorePortulacaria Afra helps global warming?

Comments (3)My personal feeling is that the 6th extinction has advanced too far now to be reversed. We are so overpopulated now that our presence is unsustainable. That is my view of the situation. Slowing the extinction is the best we can hope for. A longer view is that there is nothing to be done about the extinction of life on this planet, but that life will re-group and continue after we, and all other current life forms, are gone. Eventually our sun will go super nova and extinguish our planet altogether. However the laws of the universe will continue infinitely, and they contain the building blocks for life, planets, chemical reactions, and intelligence, so really nothing we do can affect this continuum. That is a comforting thought to me. For the short view, in the little microcosm of my own life and the little plot of land I call my own for this brief space of time, I try to create and maintain a haven for wildlife, both plant and animal. I have cared for many generations of domestic animals in my life, animals that have fertilized the land in the animal-plant eco-cycle. We mostly feel that our greatest contribution to the ecological footprint of man as a whole, was our conscious decision not to reproduce. As to the rest of our contribution to the preservation of Mother Earth as we know it, well I sort out recyclables religiously, compost what little food waste we produce, buy all organic foods whenever possible, and support the sustainable organic small farms around us that treat their animals humanely and eschew toxic chemicals. I also re-purpose many items when they have outlived their original purpose. I guess this makes me a bit of a hoarder, but throwing things away, especially those things that cannot be recycled, offends me....See Morevgkg Z-7 Va
