Anybody go to snake road this weekend??

I just got back about an hour ago and for the two days I was there, it was pretty slow. I got a little variety and one lifer (red milk), but missed two others by about 10 minutes (rattler, and hognose). Here is a quick count for me...I will post pics and stuff as soon as I get them uploaded.

Nice finds, especially the copperhead and milksnake. Dont you hate it when you just barely miss a snake? This past spring when I was there I was really wanting to find a hognose. While I was walking the road I rounded a corner and saw to guys up ahead talking and looking into the woods. When I got up to them, they told me they had just released a hognose. I looked around in that area for 15 minutes, but never found it.

You making any more trips back down? I just looked at the weather and I bet Thursday - Monday or Tuesday will be pretty good.

Good luck down there Warren! I'm usually one of the snake road early birds who has a report by now but I haven't been able to make it down there yet this spring. I think the place will be hopping though. I saw 34 snakes here in central Missouri today and one den where I came along at the very moment a single file line of water snakes were coming out of the den all heading in the same direction. Further along another one was using a black rat snake for a warm surface to thermoregulate on. And then further along the shelf a garter snake was using another black rat the same way. Black rat snakes must absorb the heat well ;-).

Sorry we missed you Warren. We arrived Sunday at noon. We witnessed the same toad fornication as you did. Saw 9 Water Moccasins, mostly smaller, with one spotted that was huge. We got out at 3 pm as the sky turned ominous. We got back to Imperial, MO. at 5 pm just as the storm hit. We pulled into the garage and then the hail hit hard. Perfect timing. A mass exodus of Painted turtles were running the gauntlet across rt. 3 the few miles to the north of Snake rd. What the heck are they doing crossing the road there??? They were all over the farming fields. Many had been smashed in the road and we pulled over a 1/2 dozen times to rescue 8 of the critters. On friday here in Imperial, we found a southern facing volcanic formation. Within 10 minutes we had 3 Black Rat snakes(one 5 ft.), one huge Blue Racer, and 2 Ringnecks. We photographed and released them all. All in all, a good reptile weekend. gary

Yup. It is a black racer. They are a good snake. There is a blue variety that is gorgeous. We have the black ones here in Ky, the blue ones in Northern Indiana. Havent seen the opposite vareity at either place.

Excellent snakes!!! I found a timber similar to that one squashed on the highway in Gallatin county on Saturday morning. That was so sad. I really wanted to turn up a red milk like yours - but no luck. Damn, I wish I wouldn't have wasted so much time on Saturday, I am so jealous of those of you who found horridus. Were you the guy looking for the just missed rattlesnake when Ryan and his dad and brother were coming up the trail from the other direction? If so, I was the guy in the white "so many snakes, so little time" shirt who came up from behind in a group of 4 with my wife and her folks.

Mitchell-I wish I could go back, but I think my weekends are pretty well booked for quite a few more weekends.

Wayne-I think that probably was me (blue NYC hat). I wondered if I might have unknowingly run into others on the forum.

Sounds like some good finds and thanks for your other post with great photos as usual. Obviously I don't get out as much as some of you, but if that's "slow" then I hope it's "slow" on Saturday when I'm there. Thanks again.
