The woodchips went on the shrub borders. The hay bales were broken into books & dumped on top of 3 of my veggie beds. Some of the grass & chopped leaves went on my flower beds, but most went into my 15 lasagne-style veggie beds. Probably the same for the rest of the materials: most went to fill my brand-new-this-year lasagne beds & the rest went into the compost heap, along with my own garden waste & household waste. The heap we are filling this year is 7'wide x 7'deep x 5'high. I find that the lasagne beds are much like compost heaps: always hungry for more & never quite full.

You've been very industrious, jitsmith! Sounds like you are on the right track - try different things and see what works, and try the ones that didn't this year again and see what happens next time ;-) LOL on the weeding - I can relate. Also the reverse is true - I've had some plants coming up that I think the leaves may be coneflower, but are slightly different than my others. I'm letting them continue till I'm sure they aren't the variety I planted a couple of years ago that didn't resurface. If not, then they must be a weed and I'll pull. Overall, this years projects for me have been successful. Yeah! I dug up some new flower beds last fall and moved some plants from other areas into them. The majority have thrived in their new homes. Except for my poppy, and a couple of plants I got free last year from O'Tooles that I planted in one of the beds - never saw them show up this year - think everything else has come back. My wild sunflower that I planted at the back of one of the beds, and sprinkled it's seeds around before winter, came up nicely this year. Had to pull some out so as not to overtake. But that area is only getting direct sun from the front, and not as many hours as I thought, so they have been flopping over (hence my other thread on 'tall semi-shade perennial'). But the flowers are so bright and cheery, I've been enjoying them! I may plant them elsewhere for better sun exposure, or keep them staked. We planted mainly tomatoes in the vege garden, and have only lost one. A few are smaller then the others, but there are tomatoes on all of them. Not real big, but big enough. But tasty, yes!!! I did lose two basil plants I got at the spring swap, but one did survive and is doing pretty well. Lost a couple of my pepper plants, and the two survivors are pretty small. The Big Jim is flowering, so may get one or two if I'm extremely lucky. I'm thinking the watering was the issue there - I've got all the plants on drip irrigation (I turn it on manually, not on a timer), but have been judging when to water based on the tomatoes needs. I'm thinking maybe the peppers need a bit more than I've been giving them. So will revisit this for next year's plans. Our grass is doing very well this year - we've had such a time with learning how to keep it looking in any way attractive outside of early spring! Think the extra rain has helped, and also the spring and fall aeration we did, as well as not mowing it as often (I like it looking a bit like a meadow, anyway!). Hi Dave, I was going to do that in any case, although I don't think I received warranty cards for the AC or coil. I was told to register online or call the 1-800 number for Bryant and give the model and serial numbers. What the CC offers is coverage for the extra year labor. That was my main interest as I doubt I'll still be in my current home 5-10 years from now. They said to get reimbursed I would need to submit the quote to their claims dept.

Thanks, tigerdunes and mike_home. So it sounds like you don't like either choice, but Choice 2 is better than Choice 1, since a heat pump doesn't make sense if nat gas is available. To answer tigerdunes questions: Yes, pricing includes new ductwork. Not sure about R8 insulation for ductwork. Do we need this if all ducts are within the insulation envelope? basement: 454 sq ft with 8 ft ceilings, slab insulation R20, R13 in furring, blanket insulation in mechanical room, rest finished 1st floor: 501 sq ft, 8 ft ceilings, minimun R20 2nd floor: 443 sq ft, 8 ft ceilings, minimum R20 attic: R49 blown in There are returns on each floor, but not sure how they're filtered. Can contractors do a load calc by looking at the plans? If I hire HVAC directly, how does the builder coordinate with him, and what about the loss of the builder's overhead fee? I don't want the process to get too complicated, and want to stay on good terms with my builder. Could you tell me why you don't like Choice 2, and what you would suggest instead? Thanks for your help.

Great list chad! I agree with Wayne, what can you say about a list that is so huge a pale milk snake is left off? I noticed you found a northern scarlet snake. I may have to go to Oklahoma next year!

Well, I just found my first Diamondback Water Snake of the year today and also two Spiny Softshell Turtles, so those can be added to my list. I was really hoping to find a Graham's Crayfish Snake or Fox Snake, but had no luck. I'll find them sooner or later!
