three in one

A friend and I decided to fish and do a little snake hunting on Turnbull Creek in Cheatham County, Tennessee, near Nashville.

The creek had a "snaky" reputation and my friend told me they literally drop out of the trees. I took that with a grain of salt, but he was not inclined to exaggerate.

We took two recreational kayaks and no sooner than we put in than we found two nice Queen snakes in the branches of downed trees next to the water.

But the best came last when we found a large and pugnacious Midland water snake coiled about a foot above the water on a grape vine that was 25-feet long and hanging over the water.

He dropped off but we caught him next to the bank. When I looked back at the vine, there about 10 feet up was a second small Midland.

When I called my friend over he promptly announced that there was a third snake 15 feet up and in the same vine.

It was another Midland and smaller than the second. Prehaps there was some kind of pecking order, the larger snakes forcing the smallest to the highest branch.

That was a first for me and I can see the basis for Turnbull Creek's reputation.
