Here are some critter pics from this weekends trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The red and black guys were all crossing the roads and it was like a game of "dont hit the cat".

As you get prepare to go, call the Blue Ridge traveler information line (828 298-0398) and check for road closures. Quite a few segments get closed due to winter weather conditions. Some sections run over 6,000' and the Parkway closes these and other difficult sections when there is ice and snow present. Because of the narrow parkway corridor, adjacent cliffs, tunnels, and nearby trees, it takes quite a while for ice to melt off, and they don't always plow. It is a GFCI, so that's quite possibly the problem. The storm was extreme and I saw huge pine trees bending in half (many people thought it was a tornado, but it wasn't), so it's entirely possible that it blew rain in. There's a cover on the breaker, but I don't think it's designed for THAT much water. There was also some flooding, so it's entirely possible that the water got higher than the circuit board. If I ever have a sunny day again, I'll crawl up under there with a hair dryer and see what I can do. If not, then I guess the next step is to replace the wire :-( Thanks, Randy!

Still love the look of how they came out. Since being in the house for 8 months now I’ve noticed a plank or 2 with a crack in it probably due to settling. I’ve asked a carpenter if they thought it was due to the flooring quality but he thought it was probably due to the installers who should have picked a different plank to lay since the ones that have cracked probably already had a minor imperfection in it. We had the floors installed with nails and glue and they are otherwise holding up great. Here is a picture of the flooring in our kitchen but floors continue through out the house.

So THAT's where all my Isabella Tiger Moth woolly bears are!

I knew they were somewhere, but I don't think I have seen a single one in these parts this year (normally they are everywhere you look at this time of year). It is like they vanished of the face of the earth. We have tons of the other tiger moth cats crossing the roads, but no Isabellas.

Yep, they were all makin' tracks on Saturday like every ten feet. It was like a mass exodus to the other side of the road.

I don't have them here in town, but many years ago, while driving in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, they were crossing the road every hundred feet for miles.

Now is it an exodus or an influx? Will Bush build a fence for these woolly bears?

OK....I am going to disregard the attempt to pull icky ol' politics into this wonderful "get away" I turn to during my hectic life.

I do miss my Isabellas...we used them to tell whether it would be a nasty or mild winter....the total absence of them makes me a bit nervous...
