Has Anyone Grown a BW CP Cross?

I saved seeds from a Brandywine Sudduth last year and all of the seedlings from those seeds came up regular leaf so I knew I had a cross. Kept one plant and grew it out just to see- and just had a dark purple beefsteak with green shoulders. Cherokee Purple was growing right next to that Brandywine, so I'm pretty sure we've identified the daddy. The only other black I had last year was Black Prince and it was a lot further away and I don't think fruit from that cross would be 1 pounders.

Anyway,the tomato was excellent- one of the best I've harvested so far. And it's got some heavy competition from plants like Akers West Virginia and Earls Faux. Has anyone grown a BW x CP before? When the next one gets ripe I'll post a picture.

Yes, the person with the user name of Mule who posts here did a directed cross several years ago and made several selections from that cross.

Hopefully he'll comment.

I grew one of the early selections called Brandokee.

Mike, Unfortunately I have to start over with my ice cream banana because i left it out in the cold. I'm currently moving and might try with a metal halide indoors. While we're on the subject of tropicals though I have a miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) in Al's 5-1-1 by a window with a cfl which is currently flushing yet again. It initally dropped all its leaves back in march but its come all the way back. Hopefully I'll get some fruit from it soon. I also have a second one of these trees- I put it in the 5-1-1 but with Sphagnum instead of peat. It dropped all its leaves and has done nothing at all for the past 3 months. The moss is very slow to dry but I hear these love water so I don't know whats wrong with this one. Maybe it needs humidity indoors to get it kick started. If anyone would know, i'd love to hear. I'm anxious to try growing some citrus this summer. -Greg

to the thread that just wont die,,,well not as easily as the plants anyway. my 2 varieties were planted in a rock garden, and few a few years i got a few berries, then they died,,,,something about roundup i guess. anyway, i have purchased a handfull of plants from another vendor than the one mentioned, they are a cross of sellarcticus and i dont remember. i have taken down a pasture and started a farly large collection of Rubus. all except 2 are "wild" varieties. the fun part was getting rid of all the pre-existing blackberries and black raspberries that call the place home. the soil the arctics are in is pretty dry, but they made it through the late summer and fall OK, so if they sprout up and do anything i will report back. one poster thought they sounded like thimble berries, they are nothing like them at all. i have those as well as Oderatus, nothing similar at all

I ordered one each Carmine Jewel and Crimson Passion this spring and planted them in identical conditions. The Carmine Jewel is taking off. The Crimson Passion fizzled and died. Most of the literature on these suggest that the Carmine Jewel is the mor vigorous and robust of the two, growing to about 6 1/2 feet in height and is more productive than the Crimson Passion. The Crimson Passion is supposed to be sweeter, but slightly smaller and less productive. I can vouch for it being less robust. There are several more varieties in the "Romance" series of bush cherries developed by the University of Saskatchewan, but only these two have been released for export to the US. I ordered mine from www.honeyberryusa.com which seems to be a small family run nursery business. No complaints about the service, but the guarantee only gets them to your door healthy. If they die after you plant them, you're out of luck. They are propagated from cuttings, so you'll get a twig that has been rooted, and runs about 8 to 10 inches tall. If you live in an area where deer might come, you'll need to protect them. A bar of Irish Spring soap seems to do the trick.

Ciao all-

I'm growing out hortist/mule's F6. He knows I'm a big fan of paste tomatoes. It's a potato-leafed plant with wispy-looking leaves that droop, very odd for PL and the fruits themselves look like pink Opalkas with an elongated narrow shape and distinctive pointed ends. The flavour is outstanding, but I wish it was more productive. The plant itself is on the short side like both of the parents, reaching a top height of less than 5 feet. In a normal year, it might get taller. There are other plants in my garden which seem a bit stunted, but it's been cool and overcast for a lot of the summer. The flesh of this tomato is quite paste-like, firm and on the dry side. I'm eager to grow the F7 and will probably grow more than one plant to ensure good production.

Expect 1 in 4 plants to express the greenflesh trait. This means a few will be purple/black. The blacks show up more because the expression is easier but the purplish ones are more than just the green flesh trait.

Other stuff I have done or I am working on stems from a BWxCP cross. Such as "Purple Haze".

You'll of course get some potato leaf plants and regular leaf ones.

As far as taste I saw a ratio of about 1:4:1
One "oh wow": 4 better than average: one average or just down right bland.

I got a few weird shape ones. That's were the one I sent Sorellina came about. They are very much like a Brandywine paste. I was interested to see how it would do above the 40th parallel. Mine plants get larger and are moderately productive. I suspect polar bears are stealing hers. The squirrels/possums/racoons/ground hogs seem to favor these fruits and other than taste I am not sure why. It (and its sister lines) were selected for taste over production.
