Identify Brown and Red Lizard

My daughter found a small 3" lizard, while we were hiking in Kent, CT today. She'd like to know what type of lizard "he" is and what she can do to keep him alive in captivity. Can anyone help?

He has a few red spots on his sides. I've attached an image.

He's more likely to survive if released in the same area as he was found.

Looks like a red-legged salamander, and I recommend you practice funeral techniques and how to explain to your daughter that she killed an innocent critter by bringing it home unprepared to properly care for it.

Or take it back to where you found it and turn it loose.

The first thing your daughter needs to learn is that you do NOT catch wild animals without a permit and a reason! You do not bring animals home and then ask "How do I keep this thing alive?"

The damage is typical of wind and cold damage which is indicated when the edges of the leaves become distorted and turn brown. This occurs frequently in plants that may be in a colder climate than recommended or in a location with severe exposure. Provide protection from winter winds and winter sun. Note, boron poisoning or fertilizer burn will create the same symptoms except uniformly over the plant rather than just on areas exposed to the sun and wind. Here is what it looks like (courtesy of Harold Greer): Putting the potted plant under a deck can keep it too dry and cause drought damage. Also you must shade potted plants from direct sun on the pot. Rhododendrons do not like warm roots. It is best to put the black pot in a wooden planter so the sun won't hit the black pot directly. Make sure the pot and the planter both have excellent drainage.

as child I grew up in Cuba in an area near the coast , lots of threes in our back yard, I had so many of this lizards along with others, I can't claim is from Cuba, but for sure I have yet to see one in Florida, I would suggest, go to a Cuban website, under "Flora Cubana" it would tell you about of the species that are from there. Cuba does have many diferent species of animal, that are only found there, like the cuban cocodrile, the smallest bird, Zun Zun like a huminbird, smallest frog, and more. One of my favoritye videos on enviroment is from PBS library "Cuba, eden by accident" it is very stonning what our horrible enemy (according to some) is doing way better than us, and lots of other countries to protect the enviroment, air , water, plants and animals

Hmm, the back-patterning still doesn't look like a direct match...but the overall large head and ridiculously long tail do seem to fit that of a baby Basilisk. Help to identify this bright/shiny red round body insect!

Guys, thank you for all your comments so far. I examine them carefully today again, it seems that their color change during their growth. They started with bright shiny red, then as they grow, they change to reddish with black or yellow lines, some of them even have a pair of small wings. I seriously doubt a water spray would do much to them, as I saw them fall onto ground to escape my fingers, then climbing back quickly. I guess I could try neem oil, but if these turn out to be some sort of beetles, would neem oil still work?

It would be an important lesson for your daughter about respecting the animals found in their natural habitat. They should be let alone, handled as little as possible, and certainly not removed from their own ecosystem.

Teach her to 'collect' interesting plants and animals by taking their pictures, rather than taking them home to die.

That's an Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens). They are very common through much of their range, so long as there are large tracts of forested habitat surrounding the ponds/lakes they live in.

I believe the others have echoed my sentiment about collecting, but since it has already been collected and if you cannot release it, you should know how to care for it properly.
