Has Anyone Grown Cluj Yellow Cherry?

Hi.

In searching for more French heirlooms, I came across a description of the flavor of CYC as being unique, very sweet yet tangy. That definitely sounds promising. If anyone here has experience with it, I'd love your opinion.

It isn't a French heirloom, but rather, Romanian.

Yes, I've grown Cluj.

It was sent to me to trial by the folks who have or had the site called Seedfest, actually I think the wife's name is Patty if I recall, who had introduced it several years ago.

I grew it only once, and I didn't think it was anything special in terms of a small yellow cherry with exceptional/unique taste although I remember the yield was excellent/

I never listed it in the SSE Yearbook and checking the current 2009 Yearbook no one is listing it.

I guess the only way you'll know if you like it is to grow it since tastes are so personal and variable.

Thanks for the follow-up! A search on this forum turned up just a single reference prior to this post. Have a feeling that no news is not good news when it comes to tomato lists.

Nice to see you check in treefrog and thanks again for the seeds,i have 2 of the goosecreeks growing now from seeds you sent and one brandyboy. Im surprised i havent read no where on this site or rthe other of anyone growing florida pink. These huge, 2 to 3 lb fruits are a gorgeous light pink. Extremely juicy, sweet and crack free, Florida Pink out-produces most plants in our garden. With very few seeds, huge production and great flavor, it is a favorite for cooking and fresh eating. Setting fruit well in hot areas, this beautiful tomato will be a fine addition to your garden. thats what laurel says about it. rowdy red is another i think will do well im growing. Named by Gary Ibsen, the seeds of this variety came to Gary from tomato breeder, Archie Millett, who crossed his favorite tomato varieties over many years to finally produce a disease resistant tomato with intense flavor. 'Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red,' is an open-pollinated tomato (78 days to maturity). The tall, indeterminate, plant produces lots of 2-inch (6-10 oz.), deep-red, round fruits with a subtle point on it's end. Fruit has robust, 'not for sissies,' bold, tomatoey flavors, with a firm, juicy flesh, that invites snacking in the garden, cooking, canning and seed-saving. It is possible that lack of light could cause the lower production. Also, given your region, it might be lack of heat. Unless you have really poor soil, I wouldn't suspect that problem. And, no, I wouldn't trim the vines. Do you see pollinators around the flowers? If not, that could indeed be a factor in low yield. Some parts of the country have a great scarcity of pollinators. If this is the case, then hand pollination would certainly be worth a try. It is not too early for those squash to have ripened. I don't know this variety. But it is from the c. maxima family, and those squash often ripen fairly quickly. See if you can dent their skin with your finger nail. If you can, leave them on the vine until you can't. Once you can't dent the skin with your fingernail I'd say they are ripe. Days to maturity are almost always more of an estimate. Conditions affect this so much. So don't just go by DTM. Can you camouflage your squash to protect them from being stolen? If I had that problem I'd probably lay a light layer of dried weeds over top of them, to obscure them from view. Hope this helps! Here is an idea for you Debra. Allendale Farm sells these in the late summer, and they also sell the plants at the beginning of the season. As others have pointed out, they are similar to tomatillos and tend to self sow in that manner. I bought 3 plants at the beginning of the season from Allendale, but a cutworm got one. I don't have quite the sun that these want, so I have many still green. The chipmunks and other small rodents have helped themselves. These are also called "Cape Gooseberries" and (?I think) husk tomatoes. I wanted them to use for raw chutneys. They do have a pineapple cast to their flavor, and the balance of the taste is difficult to describe. When ripe they fall to the ground (where the mice quickly grab them) and are a soft, golden-orange color. Chef Tamasin Day-Lewis has some recipes with these "Cape Gooseberries." I will try to remember to save out plenty of seeds. I'd saved some from last year's pints of fruit from Allendale Farm, but misplaced them. The plants take a while to get established in the garden, but take off in late July and August, sprawling over anything within an acre (perhaps 3 to 4 feet out in my sun-starved garden. I can probably get some collected seed to you. That is a lovely photo, btw. Did you take it? Does anyone have any ideas what I might do with the unripe ground cherries?

Has anyone grown a little yellow mini called Apollo 2008™, Poulpar065?

I picked up a little planter with this mini rose in it, hoping to plant it in my strawberry pot (I see no one commented on my previous post). Davesgarden says it's BS susceptible. One person posted it's hardy. Davesgarden says it only gets 6-12" tall. And I see there are 4 little rose bushes in the little 5" pot I bought. Would this do well in the 8" diameter top opening of my strawberry pot? Is it super-susceptible to BS? Would I plant all 4 little plants in the top of the strawberry pot?

Rain, when searching for information about a variety I sure wouldn't rely on just information from this message site.

I'd Google it, see who might be selling seeds, which isn't usually all that helpful since commercial places seldom say anything bad about any variety, LOL, but there's often links to places like the Plant Files at another message site as well as other message sites where tomatoes are discussed a lot.

I can't mention those sites here publicaly b'c it's against the rules here at GW and a person can be banned for doing so.

I did do a Google search and the first three pages were various seed catalogs (all not so surprisingly extolling the wonder that is CYC) and a few "wish" lists that did not discuss the variety in any detail. Think I'll do a general search for non-GW ("the horror, the horror") sites and then narrow it down to a search for the elusive CYC.

IfI grow it, will report back on its virtues or lack thereof.
