Rats! I looked at that thing for about 20 minutes, changing my mind a dozen times. The tail kept telling me FSS. I went back and forth about the nose, whether it was pointy enough. A better look at the belly woulda clinched it. It kinda looked like the colour maybe went on around. Yep, one day I'll learn to go with my first instinct. 90% of the times I second-guess myownself, I blow it. 8->

Hope this helps to remember.

It's a Florida Scarlet Snake which is a different but very similar appearing nonvenomous species to the Scarlet Kingsnake.

The rhyme is good for distinguishing the coral from its mimics but I've always found it a bit melodramatic since a coral snake bite is almost never fatal, though certainly extremely unpleasant.

From that shot, it's kinda hard for me to tell which of Sophie's guesses is right. The best ID difference is where the rings stop. If they continue onto the belly, it's a king, if not, it's a scarlet, from what I know. WTG either way in saving it from the cat.

Should I get a pic of the belly and save ya'll the suspense?
