New snake visitor

First time ever seein' this kind alive in person up close. This lil' fellow was waitin' on the porch for me this evening when I got home from work. At first I thought it was a shoe string.

I sincerely hope you bat lovers are aware of the extreme danger from rabies that bats pose to humans and other mammals--_Homo sapiens_, or not. The battery of shots used to prevent the development of rabies in a human who has had the misfortune of being bitten by a rabid animal may not be as horrid an ordeal as in decades past; but the regimen is certainly not a walk in the park.

I have never, ever seen one of these in the wild, not alive, anyway. The closest I've come was a flattened remnant on a highway in Charleston County. It's a good thing you realized this guy was NOT a shoe string, since this "shoe string" could very well have ended up killing you!

Wow! Amazing that you saw this one.
How does that go? "Red next to yellow kill a fellow. Red next to black good for Jack." Something like that. My parents used to quote that one at me because I loved to haul snakes home.
