our toads are SO loud ....

We have had a huge toad in our backyard for years & last year ?'she' had a visitor! Our yard has a concrete block wall all around it so how these toads got in we have no idea. Last year we were alarmed by some awful loud noises in the back yard by the fish pond: there we saw our big, fat old toad but also a smaller new toad & they were 'courtshipping' by the pond I guess ..... what loud noises!! I got some photos of them too! The next morning the pond was full of black toad eggs; we put some in a pail of water & they became tiny polywogs but never went beyound that stage & I guess died as did the eggs left in the pond or the goldfish had eaten them. The toads both dusappeared until last night when we heard the ruccus by the pond again ... taking a flashlite out I saw the smaller toad again but not our old big, fat toad. Poor guy, he 'roared' all night (had to close our bedroom window he was so loud!) but gone this morning. No eggs so guess he got 'stood up' by his girlfriend last night or maybe something happened to her after all these years in our yard; I could easily pick her up & hold her ... she was so tame & the size of a pie plate. Any idea how these toads got in our walled in yard & where they go in winter ... do they dig a nest underground? I am afraid in spring to dig up the garden for fear they may be dug in the soil there!
