What is this? caterpillar?

So I was digging in the garden today and I came across this little creature. Can anyone help me identify this.

I said little creature in the description but it wasn't as you can probably tell from the photo

The pupa of some sort of butterfly or moth? Many of them dig in the dirt to turn from caterpillar to adult

Where do you live? Closest city and state? that makes a difference in identifying bugs.

Yes dbarron you are correct- thank you. I intended to put them in a bug box and let my daughter take them for her kindergartens - she is a teacher and they always raise a few monarchs but after reading about this kind I’ll just take it into woods and turn it loose. I found another website too - owlcation.com that has great pictures and identification. Thanks again

Here are some photos of mine after she made her cocoon, then when she came out. The final picture is of a male for comparison. If your friend is keeping it to watch it make the cocoon and come out later, they can get a plastic "critter cage" with a vented lid from any pet store. Cocoon made inside oak leaves: Whoa! Since I don't know what hardly anything is, I like to try out "Seek", my phone app, which thinks it is a "Western Tussock Moth". https://www.whatsthatbug.com/2011/05/02/western-tussock-moth-caterpillar-2/ "Be sure to keep your distance. Blood from this species will burn you. They will leave blisters and boils on the skin as a defense mechanism designed to repel birds." (At least that's what a commenter says)

It's the caterpillar of a sphinx moth. they pupate underground, so this one had probably just dug in to do so. Give it a container of loose soil , and it will pupate and become a moth in a few weeks or next spring, depending where you are and how cold it gets.
