I said little creature in the description but it wasn't as you can probably tell from the photo

The pupa of some sort of butterfly or moth? Many of them dig in the dirt to turn from caterpillar to adult

Where do you live? Closest city and state? that makes a difference in identifying bugs.

Not sure I agree. The horn on this cat is blue/black, not orange/brown like on the tomato hornworm. And tomato hornworms don't have the yellow stripes running alongside the blue/black stripes. This looks more like a Laurel Sphinx cat imo.

Here are some photos of mine after she made her cocoon, then when she came out. The final picture is of a male for comparison. If your friend is keeping it to watch it make the cocoon and come out later, they can get a plastic "critter cage" with a vented lid from any pet store. Cocoon made inside oak leaves: Whoa! It's a girl and she's huge!!! Male

What kind of plant was this found on? It looks more like a leaf beetle larva, to me.

Not sure--but always good for bird food. :) . Yes, believe it is an eastern tent caterpillar. Their different instar phases look different. https://www.thoughtco.com/eastern-tent-caterpillar-1968197 Check out these pictures of them: https://www.google.com/search?rls=en&sxsrf=APq-WBu4-B3fEBfMjprlTrruWYdIg54o8A:1650809545143&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=instars+of+eastern+tent+caterpillar&client=safari&fir=mQDDgYOClL9

It's the caterpillar of a sphinx moth. they pupate underground, so this one had probably just dug in to do so. Give it a container of loose soil , and it will pupate and become a moth in a few weeks or next spring, depending where you are and how cold it gets.
