Plantplus you are correct on all accounts. Do not water from the top, the soil, must be dry at the top, it needed warm water if you start to water when it warms up. If the glass window is cold and your plant is near that cold and it gets a draft on the lower part of the leaf this is what happens. The soil must be mostly pumice or perlite with coarse sand and only 10% organic matter. Check out that soil, this is still winter in let it dry out and wait until good weather and light before watering it again, remember all San. species are not snake plants they all have Latin names and there are many differences, look at Jeff's plant, and you will understand what I'm talking about, this is still winter in WA and it probably needs more light, not next to a window, where it can get cold. No matter what do not toss it out. Let it dry out for a month and rewater in June. I have already gone through this experience on a very large scale. Norma

After doing some research online I 'think' it could be a baby Gray Rat snake. The makings look similar and (although not in the pictures) I specifically recall it having a 'white' colored belly. Thoughts? Here is a link that might be useful: Rat snake?

Hi, Raquel! Please don't put worm castings or vermiculite in the pot of any plant. Worm castings = too muddy. Vermiculite collapses under the slightest pressure when wet. Vermiculite can be handy for starting seeds, but isn't suitable for a more long-term planting. Both castings & vermiculite will cause the soil to have insufficient oxygen, inviting root rot (overwatering.) Roots need oxygen & moisture at the same time to function and stay healthy. Look for something that is much more chunky/fluffy/airy/porous, so roots won't rot. Unglazed clay pots can help enormously if you are prone to "overwatering" plants. Yeah, kidhorn2, WHY? Is it THAT difficult to simply learn something about snakes, and how to ID them? Seriously, I've taught second graders to do that, and we have quite a few venomous species in the Southeast where I live. You aren't exactly making yourself out to seem very intelligent by that statement. Explain to me this logic: if you know for a fact that dogs kill an average of 30 people per year in the US and send another 3 MILLION to the hospital, whereas snakes kill less than 5 people on average per year, why does it make more sense to hate snakes and not dogs? I can look at a snake and tell right away if it's venomous, and therefore potentially dangerous, but even a lifetime growing up around dogs and breeding dogs has not allowed me to be able to glance at a random dog and determine if that dog will bite or attack. I have far more reason to be concerned about a dog, than a snake. Even with a venomous snake, I have tools that allow me to safely pick it up and relocate it. It's easier, believe me, to pick up a large rattler than an angry 30-pound dog, and I've done both.
