Looks like a Southwestern Blind Snake. It is completely harmless and believe it or not they don't get much bigger than that. At 5 to 6 inches in length its already a small adult.

That is actually not a Southwestern Blindsnake (Leptotyphlops humilis), it is a Brahminy Blindsnake (Rhamphotyphlops braminus).

The difference is that our native species of Blindsnakes (in the genus Leptotyphlops) do not occur in CA. Your Brahminy Blindsnake is a native of Southeast Asia that has been brought to the US and spread through the transfer of potted plants from one area of the country to another. This is why it is sometimes called the "Flowerpot" Snake.

They are known from a number of localities around Los Angeles and will undoubtedly become more common as time goes on. They are already well established in places like Hawaii and Florida.

They are completely harmless, other than being an introduced species.

The snake in the photo I have attached is one of the native species. They are slightly larger and ligher in color. Our native blindsnakes are lighter pinkish in color, as opposed to the dark purple pink of this introduced species.

The thing I found slithering was near the faucet and we have had a lot of rain also. A snake, don't care! Tried to cut it i to with a piece of tin handy and was hard to do. If it is a baby snake, and here in Texas, any good snake is a "dead" snake.. Kinda sorta looked like the above picture. I didn't care to get too close to look...

emmawilliams, with just a little bit of education you won't have to be afraid anymore. And "here in Texas" is where I've lived for the last 25 years.

Well, let me put it this way. My niece was bitten by a small snake that looked like a worm years ago. her foot swelled up and became very blue and painful. I really don' think my comment {from Texas} was that dumb. Plus," If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" I personally don't care to be bitten by any snake, if I can help it. I was bitten by a dog when delivering newspapers as a kid. Let's eliminate all dogs. I was also stung by a bee playing baseball as a kid, let's eradicate all bees.

YOU are the one who can't say anything nice or educated, emmawilliams1, not to mention making all Texans look like ignorant and cowardly hicks who feel the need to hack everything to death because something that looked like it hurt/scared/whatever someone. NONE of the snakes that "look like worms" are venomous, so it is quite possible that the animal which "bit" your niece wasn't even a snake at all. Even if it WAS, what animal is not going to defend itself if stepped on? Almost every animal I can think of-which is a LOT of animals-will bite or scratch or do whatever it can to get a foot off of it, and I don't blame them. MOST people who get bitten by venomous snakes, though, are bitten while trying to do exactly what you like to do-killing the snake. By avoiding that behavior and leaving snakes alone, you pretty much negate that risk. I live in SC, by the way, on 56 acres of woods and fields, as rural as you can get and still have electricity, and I state that because I know a lot of the snake haters love to claim that us "city people" just don't understand what it's like to live where there are venomous snakes. I catch Canebrake Rattlers that are far from "worm-like" every year in my yard, and I haven 't been bitten, since I don't try to kill them.
