Found a snake in the garden yesterday
Comments (11)Sorry folks, but snakes do not stay at my address, whatever kind they are, if I see them. At least three children have gotten bitten by copperheads this spring/summer in our area, and needed to be lifeflighted to Hershey Medical Centerl. I have not heard how they are fairing. We put in a fairly large preformed pond several years ago, and a lot of the garter snakes in the area decided to pay a visit. They were at least 3' long and as thick around as a quarter. If they would stay small I could get along with them better. I know they are beneficial, but I don't want them in the garden where I can reach on them. I do not like killing them so we no longer have the pond. We put in a fountain instead. I want toads around to take care of the bugs, not snakes to take care of the toads. I like to view them in displays, and I think a rattlesnake has beautiful markings, but that is as close as I want to get - on the outside of the case. Jane...See MoreFound another snake on a feeder
Comments (7)I certainly hope you don't take it out on the snake; what we're doing here is attracting hummingbirds in locations and concentrations that would not normally exist. It's only natural that you will attract predators, if they're around. We're also making it easier for the predators, in my opinion, w/ the feeders w/ perches. Yes, my feeders have perches, too- I'm not judging, just making an observation. I would try to hang the feeders in such a way that they wouldn't support anything else besides the feeder and the birds. ALso, maybe hang them more out in the open, maybe on a long thin metal wire hanger, from something high above. Good luck! :)...See MoreFound a snake skin
Comments (5)Thanks Wayne. I've seen a couple black snakes in my yard this summer but neither were that large. I leave them alone of course but I know one that big will startle me if I come across it. lol That's interesting Catherine. I brought this one inside long enough for the kids to see then tossed it again. They're smelly. Maifleur - If someone put that snake skin in your yard as a joke, it was a mean joke. It's a wonder you ever went outside again. If it was escaped or released pet, then I suspect it wouldn't last outside very long. It would be hard not to wonder though. Wayne - Since you're in Missouri and know a lot about snakes, can you tell me how big our largest Garter Snakes get. I recently saw one that was as big around as a garden hose and maybe three feet long. I've seen quite a few in my yard but always quite a bit smaller. I was going to try to measure it but I chickened out....See MoreSnake we found in shed this past weekend..pictures
Comments (31)Zeetera, I LOVE lizards, they are so fun. My cats keep the lizard population down here, we used to see a lot of blue-tailed skinks. I like the green lizards or the tan/brown ones like we played with in FL all the time. They aren't big though, just little and fast. There are black snakes there that like to hunt them. Patti, I want you to know, I had snake dreams last night, 2 different ones. In one, 2 big snakes were trying to squeeze a fawn to death. Woody rescued it and then we had a fawn to care for. lol Great. I'm already tired and now a fawn? Then, a big poisonous snake was in some leaves,I saw it moving, told Woody and then it struck at me but I had jeans on and it glanced off- I'm surprised I didn't have a heart attack in my sleep! In my dream, Woody grabbed it behind the head and dispatched it. (Sorry, Marilyn, but it was just a dream!) See what you started!?...See More- 11 years ago
