Speckled Kingsnake Story

Today when my sons came home from school they noticed our two dogs were barking at something in the front yard. It was a 37 inch speckled King. We measured it and released it in the back yard. Thinking it would be a good time to check our property we were a little disappointed to only find a very few of the smaller species that we usually find. We also had put the dogs in their pen as usual when we ckeck our property. My daughter yelled for us to come quick because there was a large snake in the dog pen itself. Thinking it was the same snake we really didn't hurry but was amazed when it turned out to be another speckled king. This one turned out to be the same 48 inch snake we have seen for sure three years in a row. We take film with a camcorder and film the back of the head and belly to make sure it is the same snake. This was also the same snake that consumed a copperhead last summer. We had not seen this snake since it had spit up part of the copperhead while we were measuring it. Mostly spine and a small piece of the tail.

This makes me wonder if this snake has sort of attained his maximum size.

I guess that after checking all of our tin. boards, shingles, etc. our dogs pretty well skunked us tonight on speckled kings!

We also checked a few spots on the way back from Kansas City last weekend. Herpfriend found 2 red milks with the largest being 30 inches. It was the biggest I have ever seen in the wild. They just don't get that big down here in the Ozarks.
