I happen to have a personal friend who is a taxidermist in Virginia. Thirty years ago, when he first got his taxidermist's license, he was visited by Federal authorities, who, according to my friend, told him the folllowing: If anyone attempts to bring you a Hawk or an Owl to mount, tell them it is against the law to kill such raptors, and NEVER accept or have on your premises either of the two. If, upon inspection, either are found on these premises, your license will be revoked on the spot, and you will receive a citation to appear in Federal court.

If, on the other hand, someone brings you an Osprey or an Eagle to mount, accept the Osprey or Eagle, making positively certain to get the customer's name and address and telephone number, and IMMEDIATELY notify us (and they gave him their card to post at his place of business).

Federal authorities are dead serious about people who kill Ospreys and Eagles, and will spend endless time and money to see that they're prosecuted. Many states are nearly as serious about people killing Hawks and Owls, and will do the same. Someone in Maryland took an Owl to a taxidermist about 6 years ago to be mounted, saying it flew into the windshield of his car. State wildlife authorities were called, who came and got the Owl and did an autopsy of it, and found shotgun pellets. They prosecuted the person, who got a large fine and jail time.

I recently accepted a donation of a 50 year old GHO mount which I use in educational programs where I work. Later found out that the person donating it had shot the owl. The icing on the cake was when my supervisor asked me to write a very carefully worded thank-you letter for the donation!

In researching raptors for education programs, I learned that some small game hunters dislike certain raptors because they (the raptors) supposedly reduce small game populations. I found that interesting, and naively felt glad that people are more evolved in their thinking now. That was before doing an owl program, where one of the guests complained about the raptors killing all the squirrels (which he likes to hunt) in the area he lives. I'm still not sure why he came to the program, but I'm glad we didn't see any owls that night!

'Cardinal Richelieu' of all my roses is uniquely wretched looking by the end of summer, with its old canes yellow and half dead and the new ones looking starved. I don't think there's another variety in the garden that behaves this way. The once-blooming old roses stay green and healthy through the summer, then color in the fall and drop their leaves cleanly. Warm climate roses stay green and keep on growing until their foliage is killed by frost. All roses have canes that get old and need to be removed to encourage new growth, with the Hybrid Musks and some Hybrid Perpetuals requiring particularly steady attention in this respect. But no other rose has such fast cane turnover, or looks so nearly dead by late summer but then comes back with respectable growth the following year. I have CR in two different positions, and it looks like the new plant is behaving like the established one. People vary in how hard they're willing to fight against nature. Personally, I'm a conformist: if I find a carefully positioned plant in a well prepares site doesn't grow, and experimentation doesn't bring any success, I give up and try something that has a better chance of working. In other words, no bulbs chilling in the icebox, no ice poured over the rose. I certainly have no quarrel with people who like to try these things, but prefer to put my own energy into finding the plants that will do well in my garden once they've had a good hole dug for them, and then get simple basic maintenance (weeds pulled occasionally, an annual pruning and armful of mulch). Fortunately there's room for all kinds of gardeners in the world.

First, of all- some would advise against amending at all for large plants that require a solid footing and have spreading roots. You didn't say how deep you were making your strip, but spot replacement of soil is almost always a bad idea and creates drainage issues. Best to work with plant material that can tolerate current conditions. Sod removal is a great idea and a little nutrient rich top dressing should be fine, but if your ground is hard because it is clay, a free draining pit can become a target of run off from the rest of the yard and also wick moisture from the surrounding soil. Furthermore, it will not drain normally at the bottom. Best to work with material that can tolerate your current soil. And then to play amateur psychologist: "Obsession" implies control. Bamboo, it could be argued, is antithetical to a controlled garden, especially on a smallish lot. Many would agree they CAN be controlled, but most would admit that they suffer in the end despite all the effort going into the process. I think you will find yourself happier with a row of clumping specimens in the end. I assume you are looking for a visual screen, given your dimensions. It seems to me that some clumper or another should be perfect for this application.

Thanks for sharing- these birds are both beautiful and fascinating! I want to know more about them and the study these guys are doing. I love birds and have feeders all over my yard; they are such interesting creatures, but this is a whole different world. I would love to understand their language; what is the meaning of their actions/dances,etc.

Important! New Vaccine protocols

These protocols are not really that new, nor are they Dr. Dodd's- a task force consisting of many distinguished veterinarians produced the guidelines, and Dr. Dodd is NOT one of the authors. The canine protocols first changed in 2003 and were updated in 2006. The feline protocols were first established in 2006. Dr. Richard Ford, one of the authors of the protocols, is one of my teachers, so I am very well familiar with the subject. Here is an article written by Dr. Ford on the subject. Please read specifically the section titled "The AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines and the 3 year vaccine." Oh, and NC State CVM does NOT follow Dr. Dodd's protocols; vaccines are left to the discretion of the veterinarian following a risk assessment for each individual pet. For example, Rotties and Dobes are recommended to return at 20 weeks for a 4th parvo booster due to their extended duration of maternal antibodies, while other breeds are not. Finally the statement that "Once the initial series of puppy or kitten vaccinations and first annual vaccinations are completed, immunity from MLV vaccines persists for life" is NOT true unless your dog or cat only lives to be 7 years old. They duration of immunity is greater than 7 years, but how much greater is unknown. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I do believe in giving credit where credit is due, and Dr. Dodd is NOT an author of the vaccine protocols, nor would NC State use her protocols when we have our own author of the protocols on staff. Finally, it is VERY important to read the section on the "3-year vaccines" because that is NOT what the authors intended. They intend for each dog and cat to be assessed for risk and vaccinated accordingly. Any vet who uses the same vaccine schedule for every dog is being lazy and not doing his/her job correctly, IMVHO.
