Black Racer Behavior Question

The sun is out for the first time in several days, so I've been out looking at the butterflies and birds, inhaling the clean air that the rain brought - the big oak pollen buildup that was making a hay fever invalid of me is gone, for now anyway. I was walking across a grassy area, when a snake, undoubtedly a black racer, slithered by - I guess he was enjoying the warmth and sunshine, too. He went under some dead grass and rattled his tail! I assume the rattling noise must have come from his tail whipping up and down in the dead grass, because I'm POSITIVE it wasn't a rattler, unless rattlers go through a solid brown/black stage.

I've heard of mimicry - is that what this is? Did he/she want to scare me away?
