Fire Belly Newts (help)

Hey guys,

So I am setting up an aquarium with fire belly newts in it for my girlfriend's birthday. I am not very familiar with this so I was hoping someone could answer some questions for me! I have 5 gallon tank. I plan on lining the bottom of it with white river gravel, putting in some stones, some petrified wood, as well as some plants. I have already picked up a filter (Fluval U1) and looked into what the newts require to survive.

I am mostly wondering, what do I clean the tank with to start? Is there a certain cleaning agent that won't cause harm to the newts? I've been told to wash the river gravel very thoroughly 10 times, brush the stones clean, etc. How often should the tank be cleaned? I've been told bi-weekly is okay. Are real plants okay? Is there a particular typoe that is best? How often should they be fed?

Some of those might be stupid questions, but as I mentioned I am not very familiar with this. Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
