I've been watching a GHO on a nest that I pass to and from work. It's been astonishing to watch because she is out in plain sight - if you know where the nest is located.
Yesterday, as I was passing I saw one big fuzzy owlet moving around, seemingly trying to make him/herself more comfortable.
Good luck with your nest. We had one here (central CT) out in plain sight also. I think they may have been a migrant pair. She nested 1/22/05 and I kept track of it daily. Two very healthy owlets got to the age of 6-1/2 weeks. But then other curious people (who know very little about raptors) started stopping, walking in to approach the nest, etc. After a few days of such a carnival atmosphere (these people would not stay safe distance away even after we posted signs on the private property they were trespassing on), the owlets disappeared in one day. Too young to fledge. I found a few bits of tail with scat attached, and one leg out strewn in the field. After 40 years of trekking thru these fields, this was the most wasteful thing I've ever seen. SO disappointing. Perhaps you should notify DEP in your area and try to prevent this happening to your very visible owl family. Best regards for success with the nest.
