"Some species, such as some snails, practice sex change: adults start out male, then become female (See also sex reversal). In tropical clown fish, the dominant individual in a group becomes female while the other ones are male, and bluehead wrasses (Thalassoma bifasciatum) are the reverse. In the marine worm (Bonellia viridis), larvae become males if they make physical contact with a female, and females if they end up on the bare sea floor. This is triggered by the presence of a chemical produced by the females, bonellin. Some species, however, have no sex-determination system. Hermaphrodites include the common earthworm and certain species of snails. A few species of fish, reptiles, and insects reproduce by parthenogenesis and are female altogether. There are some reptiles, such as the boa constrictor and komodo dragon that can reproduce sexually and asexually, depending if a mate is available.

And many of these are genetic accidents where two sexual species have hybridized produced a triploid "species" which can't reproduce normally.
And if there is only one sex for a species...why do we call it the female? Shouldn't it really be "neither male nor female"?

This is an exaggeration of the truth. There have been a total of two extraordinary circumstances under which a komodo dragon and a boa constrictor somehow reproduced parthenogenetically. They don't do it normally just because a mate isn't available.

This statement is ridiculous and unfounded in fact. Male humans are no more an extension of females than females were derived from some mysterious "extra rib" in the first human (oh...and what about Lilit?).

Males and females are two different evolutionary strategies in humans (and other species) and are equally codependent for the survival of the species. Men can't pass their genes on without women, and women can't pass their genes on without men. From an evolutionary point of view, it is fair to say we are both useless without each other.

And this has nothing to do with identifiying reptiles and amphibians in the garden, but I was bored and hate seeing stupid statements go unchallenged.

Salamanders are pretty cold weather tolerant. The Tiger and Spotted Salamanders normally start migrating to breeding ponds around Valentine's Day. Easy courtship day to remember... I haven't seen any salamanders or sign of them yet this year (but haven't been out much) but I did see 4 snakes on January 8th. We've had more snow and cold here in Missouri than last winter. Last year I saw 3 snakes on New Year's Day and over 20 in the month of January. We had hardly any snow at all last winter. P.S. Oh yeah, I noticed and answered your albinism question from awhile back regarding the snake in the Missouri Conservationist (its now on page 2 of this forum) that the magazine identified as an "albino copperhead." You were right that it was not a copperhead..rather it was an albino prairie kingsnake.

Try getting an etching of the mark. Tape a piece of tissue paper over the mark and rub it with a soft lead pencil. Hopefully the mark will pop out more and allow you to read it.

Hi, I filled it in too, under healthy frogs! Just spent the afternoon in the pond getting rid of yellow globby things (the barley straw is covered in it, but maybe in time it will work?). No ill or dead amphibians about--just no amphibians around the pond. See froglets on occasion. I think this is due to the snakes which like water, so they have hopped to someplace else in the garden. Pity as usually this time of year I don't see a lot of frogs but do see the toads snoozing in a sun spot in the pond. any ideas about catching and moving snakes? I like snakes, but I am very very fond of my amphibians!! I guess though that during breeding season snakes are still hibernating so not a danger? Miss my frogs! and the dragonflies--gradually finding exuvia of the big guys about, enough to take into work to freak people out, and about to send one to a friend who likes such things. But only seeing a common darter about, and loads of damselflies. The exuvia look like the big emperor ones (the ones with wingspans that rival Phelps), but none about. happy ponding, chip
