Heuchera gemination- you want seeds that are last year so keeping them for more than a year not a good idea. Seeds are tiny, while it possible to WS them, one has to be very careful not let drainage from the top. Seed is easily germinated at warm, just sprinkle it on surface and keep moist. Wonderful way to combat winter gardening withdrawal- start seeds inside, they really do not need much light and because they stay small for longish time they do not take a lot of space. There is no need to transplant them early in separate containers since their root system is small/ one of the reasons while they heave so much during the winter/. They separate very easily when they are larger. They could grow bigger until you are comfortable with their size and then you can either transplant them into garden or transplant in separate cells. By next year you will have decent size plants. Coloring does not show well until they are into their second year so suggest keep most of the seedlings- you can see if it is going to be dark or green form but veining and tone comes later. It has been my observation that heucheras grown from seed of the plants in my garden have better survival rate as compare to store bought- which I can not keep alive more than a year. So far I have seed only dark or green form, am looking forward to see if I could find a yellow one. This year I have tiarella with good yellow coloration but not heuchera. Fun stuff!

Nice pictures. A great way to recycle that birdbath great thinking on that. It all looks so pretty. good job. Can't wait to see them all grown up. :) Paula

Alkosa, yes, you got the name correctly on that plant. Microthrix also ID'd it with its old name (the one I'm used to seeing), Abromeitiella brevifolia. That was truly a mass of amazing specimen plants last year!! I must make a note to try to make the Huntington's annual July Show & sale this time. (Reggie, should we make a plan??!!??) I missed this post last year, & didn't see Jordi's fantastic Eulychnia castanea fa. spiralis blooming till now!! Wow! Have not seen one before!! Thanks to Moosetrackz & Lzrddr for posting all the pix from that 2012 show! What a treat!

Thanks so much, everyone! I also tend to think she's VERY cute, but maybe I'm biased? Ahhh, yes, our new "child..." I have posted pictures previously of our "first born," our Shih-tzu, Murphy. Well, now Murphy has a furry new companion, a Shih-tzu brother named Bode (pronounced BO-dee.) As if our lives weren't chaotic enough with a new baby, why not add a puppy to the mix? Here is Bode... (sorry, the lighting was a bit bad, it's hard to see his eyes...) Here are Bode and big brother Murphy playing... AND... my big news... MAKENNA IS CRAWLING!! I simply must share this video. I hope this works, I have never tried to link to a video in Photobucket before... click on the link below to see the video! Hope you enjoy it! (Oddly enough, Murphy makes a very brief appearance in this video.) Here is a link that might be useful: Makenna is crawling
