I brought two chrysalis' inside as they were in a bad location, one normal green and one white. I had never seen a white chrysalis survive before, but thought I'd give it a try. On July 12th the green chrysalis hatched and I took the monarch outside and placed it on a milkweed plant where it dried it's wings and took off. I was thinking the white chrysalis simply didn't survive but decided to give it a couple of days. On the morning of July 14th a healthy monarch hatched out of the white chrysalis and I took it outside, where he flew away just a few minutes ago.

I don't know about that but I picked up 6 wild cats and fed them in a plastic pretzel jug. one died, the rest went into chrysalis. 2 have emerged. one fell apart, one is very dark but looks like it may have died. The last one is looking real good so far. The only problem is that the ones that emaerged decided to do so while we were sleeping and my 4 year old missed it. Am hoping she can watch the next one emerge. She loves helping to care for and releasing her 'babies' . I wish I could put a picture of the enclosure I made. I got two 12-18 inch rings and two smaller rings. Using white netting (soft) from the fabric store I stitched around the big rings with them about 3 feet apart. I overlapped one hte side to keep them from escaping. I stitched the smaller rings 6 inches above the top ring and below the obottome ring. Gathered the ends and tied them and have it hanging in my office. When the butterflies emerged they woudl not go to the sugarwater so I picked a few flowers outside and stuck them in a jar. By placing the dogs dish inthe botom I had a nice place for the jar.

Update on 3 of my chrysalises! 3 eclosed yesterday after approx 4 weeks - amazing experience and so beautiful! Sad news though that one fell from the spot it was holding onto (it was a little windy) right after eclosing. It was crawling in the soil so I put a stick down and it climbed up and I hung it from a nearby plant with a clothespin. The wings plumped up for awhile but never fully finished. I found it this morning dead. So very sad that it made it thru almost to the end to die. Butterfly raising, although so exciting, can be stressful. I understand why people raise them indoors and then release them!
