Caterpillar Identification Needed

My daughter found a caterpillar yesterday and we would really like some help identifying him.

We've put all different kinds of leaves around him, but he isn't eating anything.

Why don't you put him back where you found him? Now you have a picture, you will be able to ID him and he will (hopefully) be able to live on.

It's often helpful to know a general location so that insects can be indentified more easily. This caterpillar looks like an armyworm/cutworm to me; there are many, many species that belong within that group of larvae.

It was probably looking for a place (in the ground) to pupate.

What's your location? Makes a big difference, in some instances. Oops, I see that you are in the UK. You good people have more of the tent making caterpillars than we do! Thank you Sarah, this was the closest I came up with, but I wasn’t sure if it would have to have the orange/ red or if this is something that would show up after it grows a bit. It was almost an inch I would say.
