I remember when I learned exactly what it means to "play possum". My dog actually CAUGHT one and brought it home. It was limp, I thought it was dead. My father lives next door, where my dog finally dropped it. I went to my dad to tell him that a dead possum was in his yard. I took him to where I'd last seen it. IT WAS GONE! It wasn't dead, it was playing possum!!!

Did you know that possums aren't really "Playing" at all. They actually go into shock and faint when threatened. So they're really unconscious. I startled one in a trash can once, and I nearly fainted too! LOL

What a cutie. I have raised them before after loosing their mommas to cars, cows, etc. I remember raising my first two. I made little pouches for them to live in under my shirt. They thrived and were later released into the wild once I was sure they would survive. I would remove them often from our burning barrel, they would scrounge in there a lot. My mither was terrified of them. lol. They do faint. I was always leery of any bought into my yard by my dog, not sure if they were dead or playing dead.

Well, actually they dont go into shock. Their not fainting goats. They slow down there metabolism in order to make it appear as though they are dead. The telltale sign is that even though they are limp and appear lifeless. If you blow smoke in their face you can see them breathe out. If they were in shock then they would not be breathing, and they are absolutely, totally conscious at all times. Dont fool yourself into thinking they dont know every sound, movement, smell and action going on in their environment around them. They may appear in shock, but they are not. I am a third year veterinary student. I dont know who told you that they go into shock, but that is incorrect.

I hope the little fella got a small burger in exchange for the photograph! LOL
