Yes it's a snake plant; don't know which exactly. Why are you eager to repot, due to the heavy mix you say they're in? I'd hold off on watering it for a while, give it bright indirect light or if you want to give it more light, increase the exposure gradually. If you change the mix one wants to make it porous & fast draining. I'd add a lot of pumice, or if you can't get that use perlite, to cactus & succulent mix. Try to avoid mixes w/ peat, they can become problematic. Less is more w/ these plants, they do best w/ a fair amount of neglect. There's a Sans. forum at GW if you'd like to take a look & read their care, but it's a pretty slow going forum.

Was his belly a pinkish tan? He looks like a wormsnake to me, but it's a little hard to tell from that shot. They do look like oversized earthworms and tend to be fairly calm snakes, rather shy, actually. They are an indication you have great soil (lots of humus & worms), and are completely harmless. Do tell your wife.

Okay, I agree, Billyboy is right. The scales and markings on the head sure look like a coachwhip even though the tail doesn't look right, obviously it lost its tail to something. I thought I was looking at a snake molting but apparently not, in all my sojourns here over five decades I don't recall seeing this snake :-( Tom

wayne mo I am going to be one of the very few who agree with you! I find all snakes fascinating, thanks to a great Dad who taught me to respect things in nature, and that every creature is here for a reason. Not that everyone should go out and start hugging snakes...I do understand that fear, but I worked for 5 years as a park ranger trying to change opinions. Too bad the garter snake at the beginning of this post was found mushed. :( Interesting fact about copperheads - there has never been a documented case of a death caused by copperhead venom. But I can say from personal experience that it HURTS! (while hiking, always know what's on the ledge you're about to stick your hand on). When I find a copperhead around our property, I carefully relocate it with a pitchfork. Husband kills them, but I just can't do it.
