Oh I forgot, it's about 3/4" long, in N.E. Calif.

It looks like an Araucaria species of some kind, but am not sure which. The 'catkin' looking cones are the male thingies and the others are the female structures. When I first looked at the picture I thought it might be Araucaria araucana...the Monkey Puzzle tree. Where was this tree located? 'Cause if it's in zone 6, I'm waaaaay off base. ;-)

I'd go with snake fly - Neuroptera, Raphidiidae - too small for Dobson fly, and the long prothorax is characteristic of snake flies. Hope this helps!
