what kind of spider is this?

Found this guy (or girl) this morning as I was picking tomatoes. It's about 3 inches long and has a beautiful web. It was still there tonight when I came home from work. Can anyone tell me what kind it is and if it is aggressive....bite? I don't want to kill it but I usually have a pretty bad reaction to spider bites. Thanks.

A spider bites as a defensive move. They're not aggressive. That is, it won't try to bite unless you get pushy.

That said, you have one of the orb weavers, a large showy gal called golden argiope.

It's a Crab Spider, probably one of the Misumena genus. The spider itself is white; I think that what you're seeing as black is actually a fly it's captured and is eating. These are harmless and do you a big favor keeping the bugs off of your Hoyas. I actually place spiders intentionally on my plants, for that purpose.

Looks like one of the many kinds of what are called 'grass spiders', perhaps an Angelenopsis species. They make the small sheets of webs you see on top of the lawn and shrubs after a heavy dew.
