First snake of 2005

Woo hoo. Found my first snake of 2005. A sunny 80 degree afternoon walk and I nearly step on this lil' cutie's head. A good three feet long. I love how it shook its tail against the leaves. :)

If it shook it's tail...some type of corn or rat.
You know....we are COVERED in ice right now! I hate winter!
The trees are losing limbs left and right and many people are without power....don't know how I avoided that one!

Yes, the snakes are defiantly out around here. Hi bwalters, we are about 15 miles north of Bulverde, TX. We are awfully dry this year so the pond is bringing in alot of wildlife. Indigos are great snakes and get pretty large, supposed to be immune to rattlesnake venom so they can catch and eat them. Our rat snakes get big too but alot more aggressive. We have a big girl (rat snake):) that has lived in a hole under a red oak for years now but I have never seen her at the pond.

Also i need a bit of help. I have this lily planted a pot for most of this summer until the fall then im going to transplant it into my garden. So anyway just today i dug up the bulb to check on it and to my surprise the bulb is very small, and i see this as a problem. aprox size - 1-2 Inches. How fast does a bulb regenerate creating new scales for next year? Should i cut off the spent bloom since it's pollinated already?

I was the same way.....but not with roses. I have a full time job, and it is all I can do to take care of the garden I have and its problems, without roses. I love them to look at. I keep babying a climbing rose that was here when I first moved in, but it gets mildrew really bad, and I can't seem to find the time to baby it like I should. The lilies are so much easier for me. But, I have quite a garden of part shade in the back, and part shade to sun in the front. Some of my favs are hosta, aroids (alocasion, colocasia, jacks, herbs, astilbes, petasites, hibiscus (hardy), hollyhocks, azaleas, hydrangeas, clematis, and morning glories. Philadelphia, I bet, is a wonderful growing zone. We're expecting high 90's to 100's next week. I hate the heat. Susan

Haven't seen any copperheads yet this year, but did run onto a fairly good size--over 3 ft--black snake a month or so ago. Can't allow them to be here as they will eat baby chicks. Last year a black snake broke up two bluebird nests--the same bluebird, not the same black snake. Biggest black snake I ever saw was over 7 ft. Biggest timber rattler over 4 ft and it was bigger around than the black snake. Last year saw a lovely scarlet king snake which I did not disturb as they are harmless and I seldom see one, and they are really pretty. And last year saw a green snake, also harmless.

That's a beautiful Corn Snake! Where do you live, Florida? It looks like one of the Florida Corns, a bit more lighter in the background orange than the ones we have here in SC. I caught a 2 1/2-foot Corn attempting to cross the road just two days before Christmas, right before one of the worst cold snaps we have had, with temps in the teens! A Native-American friend told me that finding snakes and other animals that are supposed to be in hibernation now at this time of year is a bad omen of a really rough winter to come later, and for once I hope she is wrong! It's still warm here, though, with temps near 80 during the day; I am having to run the AC in the afternoons-in JANUARY!

What a beautiful Corn Snake! I wish we had them around here. One of the prettiest snakes in North America.

Yeh, this has always been my childhood dream find, that never came true until now. Everybody around where I live now are like "Oh, it's just a corn snake, no big deal." But for me, it's a fulfilled challenge to catch one in the wild. Here's another pic.
