Also commonly referred to as Wax Begonias. The amount of ground each individual plant covers is dependent on how each individual plant grows for you. I've seen estimates of everything from 4 to 10 inches. With too much sun, the leaves can turn translucent and pretty ugly. Partial sun suits them fine and they don't mind being close together. I'm going to play Ken here and say your posts often leave out details that could be useful - are you wanting to cover a big space as in the Old Victorian practice of carpet bedding? A patch here and there? Or a border? How much space - as in footage - are you wanting to devote to this plant? Coverage might be trial and error as to the number of market packs you'd need. It's such a popular plant, Home Depot, Wal-mart, etc. carry racks and racks of them every year so not starting out with enough first time around is easy to remedy.

The good news with sedum is that it roots in water. I usually wait until I have a couple of good stalks and then cut them off and put them in water. The mother plant will still bloom although it might be a bit later and I create a whole other planting. This plant is very drought hardy and some of the new varieties have all purple foliage. Every garden should have this. BTW...this does GREAT in pots since it holds water in its succulent leaves and rarely needs water. Even someone with a "black thumb" can keep sedum alive. :) Ronda

Could your large, red warty pumpkin be the member of the Hubard squash family known as Victor, aka 'Red Warty Thing'? I grew it a couple of years ago, but mine did not get as large as the one you describe. It is featured in Amy Goldman's squash book, on page 53, if you have a copy, or you can see a photo at the Rupp Seeds web site. Amy describes it as weighing around 24 lbs. and being roughly 13" long by 15" wide. If yours is quite a bit larger than that, perhaps it is a cross between Red Warty Thing and a larger squash. That's the really odd thing about this rosebush - it's form. When it first bloomed, it was on last year's growth and mostly (if not all) in single blooms. Last year's growth is rather short, bushy, with much thinner canes. More recently however, it has put on growth that shoots straight up 4, 5, and over 6 feet in the air on stalks that are incredibly thick. The blooms on this newer growth are in clusters. This led me to believe it might be grafted and I had stalks coming up from the rootstock. But that's just the thing - these newer, taller and thicker stalks are growing from the lower portion of last year's growth. Not even right down at the bottom, so that I might confuse it with rootstock growth. It is from a few inches up on last year's growth. Plus, as has been mentioned, there is no visible graft. Of course, it could be buried, but I honestly don't think so. The only thing I could think of is the fact that it is growing in different conditions now than it was previously. My sister had it in poor soil and never feed it - probably never supplemented water either. Whereas I've given it Bayer a couple times and worm castings numerous times this season. I also water it pretty often. Some might say too much (for instance, my husband when he sees the water bill... lol). I wish I had a way of knowing more about it's history, but my sister rescued it from an old abandoned house that was to be torn down. When she moved in with me for a brief period, she brought it with her, and when she moved out she left it here for me. I will try to get pics of where the new growth is coming up from last year's. It is very peculiar. At least in my opinion.
