Upside down feeder question

I'm looking for a small upside down feeder so I can feed some chickadees without feeding the sparrows and would like it to be able to hold black oil sunflower seeds. The chickadees seem to like the black oil seeds compared to the safflower ones. Do you guys notice that the chickadees like niger over black oil or no?

I never see Chickadees on my niger feeder but they like the boss and woodpecker suet.

last year i saved the mesh bags from the grocery store that some fruits come in. one had just the right size mesh to hold the black oil sedds and another with bigger mesh that holds the stripd sunflower seeds. and just hung them from a branch. the chickadees and nuthatches hung on them and pulled the seeds out. the finches also hung on them the sparrows did not. Have not put them out yet this year till we get some snow cover.

On West Main Street in Richfield Springs, New York,(Zone 5) at the foot of the hill as you enter the center of the village, there is a white house, formerly, or perhaps still, the office of the Jordan architectural firm. Immediately adjacent to it, on the adjoining property, there was, in 1974, and may still be, a Water Beech grown upside down, the gnarled, contorted and twisted root crown producing a very dense canopy of healthy leaves, with dense shade underneath. If that tree is still there, there is your answer. This is, or was, a healthy tree, surviving the often brutal winters characteristic of the Mohawk Valley uplands. Consult Dave's Garden- they may have the answer. zoom in on Google Earth's satellite image of Richfield Springs, NY; It's on the south side of W. Main St. US 20, where it veers west-northwest up a long hill towards its intersection with NYS Route 28 just outside the village line. There is a side street two doors away. The tree, situated in the side yard between the two old houses, would show up on the satellite image as a relatively small, round, dense crown.

Take heart, Doug. The intent of a bulb is to grow, and to flower. You didn't say if the upside down bulbs were daffodils, which have contractile roots that will pull themselves around to pointy side up. Tulips will just grow a longer stem; they know which way to the surface. Planting bulbs right side up saves their energy, but upside down is not usually fatal. As owlette said, for little bulbs like ranunculus and anemones where you can't tell, sideways is good. Lilies on their side are okay. In theory, it keeps the centers from rotting. Lilies tend to not grow straight up, anyway. the point at which the stem emmerges may be as much as a foot from the actual bulb. All those little bulbs will make a blooming size in a year or two. Can you just dig a trench along the edge of a bed and tuck them in? They need some rich compost or fertilizer. So do the bigger bulbs that haven't been blooming. Nell

fritzmom, I believe it's called torpor or something similar. They've talked about it on this site, but I've never seen it. You could probably search it, if I spelled it correctly. Their hearts can't keep up with their bodies and it puts them into this state until they can regroup, I think.

Keep watching. Most of the birds that use the upside down feeders will be like nuthatches, chickadees and various members of the woodpecker/flicker family. If you were expecting cardinals and finches they generally do not like to eat upside down. If there is enough side space in your feeder they might eat from the side but not bottom. You might want to try haning it higher.

Jay, My Carolina Chickadees go for the BOSS and the suet, just like Bob's. You don't like Sparrows? The only ones I am heartily opposed to are the House Sparrows, and maybe those are your problem. Honestly, I find that I have to put up with a few of them feeding from time to time as I don't want to deprive the "nice" little birds of food because of them. I did buy an inexpensive caged suet feeder from TS that my Chickadees love. HOSP don't go there.~~Angie

Hi Bandz, I have a clinger feeder right now that the HOSP and the House Finches use and I also have an upside down suet feeder out for about 3 weeks with no chickadees using it. I will try to put next to the clinch and see what happens though.

I want an upside down boss feeder though because this feeder is hung near my window and I find house finches make too much racket, I much rather hear the chikadees going for them, then the house finches, but I don't know if the upside down feeder they sell work because they usually say it only holds niger seeds.

Well Jay, the only birds that I have ever seen feeding at an upside down seed feeder are the Goldfinches. I have never heard of an upside down BOSS feeder. I have an upside down suet feeder, and the Chickadees do not use it. They go for the caged suet feeder.
